We are calling this blog a business guide because this will help you navigate your new or existing taxi app business through the COVID-19-affected market.

Last week we carried out the casual survey in our online daily meet.

We asked all team members: how frequently are you travelling during this ongoing pandemic and what do you prefer among public transportation, taxi and own vehicle?

The answer was very well expected.

Almost 90% of our team members do not go out during the pandemic and if they need to travel for any reason, they simply avoid public transportation and taxi due to concerns over the infection.

All other people across the world have changed their travelling patterns the same way.

And this is a really frightening situation for entrepreneurs who own the taxi app or who are planning to go for taxi booking app development.

But with Coruscate, it is always easy to find the light at the end of the tunnel and reach there easily!

We’ve made drastic changes in our taxi app solution and made it post-COVID-19-ready which facilitates you to derive fruitful results from your existing or new taxi app.

Before we reveal our custom taxi app solution, let’s first understand why you need to level up the taxi app business operations and taxi app itself.

Impact Analysis of COVID-19 on Taxi App Market

The Washington Post quoted, “The taxi industry is another fresh casualty of coronavirus pandemic.”

  • Taxi drivers are leaving the taxi industry

New York Taxi Workers Alliance announced the death of 28 drivers due to coronavirus. The number is very small as compared to the national death toll, but it is large enough to trigger fear among taxi drivers. As a result, they are switching their job for their own safety.

  • The customer activity is falling sharply

During the April-June 2020 period, Uber reported 55 million customers, down from 99 million reported during the same time period of last year. The downward trend is still going on and it is not anticipated to give good sight before 2022.

  • Premium users are turning away

Generally, taxi app business owners are making the majority of revenue through premium services, i.e, UberX and Uber Black. But due to virtual business activities and travel restrictions, taxi apps do not get enough bookings from premium users.

Introducing Our New-Age Custom Taxi + Delivery App Development Solution

You can’t change the entire situation, but you can at least fight it, resourcefully!

What’s our new-age custom taxi app platform or solution?

Due to the pandemic, the taxi app business opportunities have been restricted and so does the revenue.

The only feasible way to keep revenue high is the integration of other business modules with taxi app business modules.

With the same thought, we integrated a delivery app module to our taxi app platform to double the business opportunities.

Meaning, you can now take taxi bookings and requests to deliver any courier from the single app.

This way, you can earn more – from two separate business modules, in one single app!

How does a taxi app with an integrated delivery app module work?

Sam is your partnered taxi driver who gets a job request when someone books the taxi and the algorithm finds Sam appropriate for the ride.

When no one books the taxi, Sam does not get any job request.

During Sam’s ideal time – when he has not any ongoing job – the app sends Sam the delivery request.

If Sam accepts the request, he has to reach the pickup location, collect the courier and deliver it.

Sam will be paid based on the distance he travels to deliver the package from the pickup location.

Who should consider our new-age taxi app platform?

  • Every taxi app business owner who already owns the taxi app and struggling to keep revenue high with only one business module
  • Every new entrepreneur who is planning to go for taxi booking app development during the ongoing pandemic
  • Every new entrepreneur who is planning to go for delivery app development during the ongoing pandemic

What are the benefits of our advanced taxi app cum delivery service app?

  • You will have multiple revenue streams to generate more revenue.
  • You can target a large user base.
  • You can attract more taxi drivers due to increased earning opportunities for them.
  • You can get a competitive edge.
  • You can expand your taxi business without spending much.

What is that one reason why I should invest in an app with a taxi and delivery app modules?

Try to understand the whole situation here.

The taxi app market has already been facing many challenges. And the courier and food delivery market has already been booming.

By acquiring our multi-purpose app solution, you are not just leveraging the current boom in the delivery market, but you are also preparing to seize the taxi app market once it will get its traction back.

So, without any doubt, it is a wise decision to have an app with a taxi app and delivery app modules rather than the app with just a single module.

You are just one click away from breaking your illusion with a free app demo and consultation

After reading so far, you must now have gotten the fact that we’re not just the taxi booking app development company, but we are also a business growth partner.

Vaya Africa is a South Africa based ride-hail mobility venture founded by Zimbabwean mogul Strive Masiyiwa. Vaya is a subsidiary of Strive Masiyiwa’s Econet Group, including Liquid Telecom

Vaya has acquired a fleet of Nissan Leaf EV to launch an on-demand electric taxi service and delivery service in Zimbabwe this week and also developed its exclusive solar-powered charging stations aka Vaya stations.  The company has also finalized partnerships to begin the same service in markets of Kenya,  Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.

Vaya is also exploring EV options for its other on-demand transit services such as bikes, Tuk Tuk taxies, and delivery. The main reason Vaya is shifting to electric alternatives is the unit economics, moving to electric will save 40% on fuel and maintenance costs. According to Econet, the cost to top up will be around $5 for a range of 150 to 200 km.

The company has already adapted its business according to the current situation to contain the transmission of COVID-19 in Africa. Vaya provides Personal Protective Equipment to its drivers and sanitizes its fleet four to five times a day.

Insights into the Vaya Africa mobility business:

VAYA Africa is owned by Cassava Smartech under Cassava On-demand Services, a Mauritius registered subsidiary of the Econet Group Limited with a mandate to provide a transportation solution (tailor-made) in Africa, encompassing the latest technologies through a mobile application VAYA.

Currently, the company is active in the countries of Botswana, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe of the continent. Vaya is one of the first on-demand (app-based) ride-hail service to operate on a large scale in Zimbabwe.

The Service was launched in 2018 and it has been constantly expanding its wings since then. Vaya now offers several mobility services including Vaya Ambulance, Vaya  Shuttle, Vaya Hopper, Vaya Cross Border, Vaya Premium, Vaya Air Charter, Vaya Saffari & Tours, Vaya Intercity, Vaya Car Pool, Vaya lift Driver, Vaya Club, and now Vaya Electric.

Apart from mobility Vaya is also the leading player in the logistics industry and offers services including Vaya Express, Vaya Van Delivery, Vaya Tractor, Vaya Truck, Vaya Clean City, Vaya Road Assist, Vaya Clean City water Delivery, Vaya Borehole Drilling.

How does Vaya mobility works?

Users can schedule a ride through the Vaya Africa application, you can pick from the type of vehicle listed above, you can also set up special preferences such as handicap accessibility, etc. Then the application will give you the estimated cost and time for the ride and you can then confirm the booking. The application also provides the in-app map facility so you can track the vehicle in real-time.

You can also send parcels using the same application, you can book a bike or a truck depending upon the size of the package and the costs of such service are usually marginally cheaper.

The application also provides a user dashboard containing all your information including completed/canceled/ upcoming bookings. You can also select a payment method in-advance to make easy payments.

You can also sign up as a driver, with a separate application called Vaya Partner. When registering you have to upload a number of documents which include your ID/Passport, license, proof of address, and police clearance report.

How does Vaya ensure the safety of the users?

As we listed above, Vaya Africa does the complete background check of the drivers before they join the service to ensure that they are not a threat to the commuter’s safety. All drivers undergo a strict vetting process and must also have their vehicles inspected prior to entering service.

Vaya application shows users a clear facial picture of the driver with the license plate number of their vehicle before booking a ride, which you can share with your kin. In any case, your driver arrives in a vehicle with a license plate number different than what you have confirmed while booking, then you can take actions against it.

Vaya app also lets commuter share their trip status with their next kin so anything happens during the ride it won’t be too hard to trace them.

The Vaya Africa provides ‘Panic Button’ in the app that lets commuters contact a maximum of 5 numbers in case of any emergency rises during transit.

How does Vaya undercut the competition?

Vaya offers the lowest fares compared to its rivals, and also it has certain benefits of knowing local culture and preferences that make Vaya understand what the people want across the market and that makes a lot of difference.

Everything you need to know about African mobility market before you start your own mobility business:

Africa is the world’s 2nd largest and populous continent. It is estimated that the population of Africa will reach almost 2.5 billion by 2050. Over 40% of the people currently living in the urban areas of the continent, surely the number will rise in the coming years, except for the sub-Saharan region.

Car ownership is very low in Africa just 2% per capita, compared to 70% in the US and 50% in Europe. People of Africa manage their personal transport through various modes, such as bicycles, bikes, commuter taxis, or walking. On top of that Africa has now entered into a technology revolution, especially in services, the pace of urbanization and the issue of mobility will only increase.

Its large landmass and high population make the region a multi-wheeled and perfect market for shared mobility, that is the reason why Africa became the hotspot for ride-hail startups and VCs

The car-sharing market in Africa:

Car sharing has always been around longer and more popular in Africa compared to Western countries. In fact, car-share giant Lyft was originally homage to the African country Zimbabwe and was known as Zimride, where the founder Logan Green was inspired by the widespread practice of car-sharing.

Food, accommodation, and travel requirements are the major driving forces of shared mobility. The emergence of smartphones, rising wireless technology, and peer-to-peer technologies give an extra booster to the already thriving shared economy within the region.

Le’s take an example of Locomote, it was the first car-sharing network to be launched in Africa in May 2015. It basically provides cars for short trips/one-way trips and a short-term rental option of up to three months. The users only have to pay for the exact amount of time and fuel used during the journey with insurance and parking expenses. Locomote currently operates in the cities of South Africa including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.

Africa still has some issues in the car-sharing market including fractured road networks, decreasing air quality in major cities, inadequate road safety measures, higher rates of vehicle accidents, etc. But the African governments are looking at it in more holistic ways of developing advanced transportation infrastructure.

Ride-hailing market in Africa:

As previously mentioned, the car ownership rate is quite low in Africa. Despite these statistics, Volkswagen is going to establish a car factory in Rwanda, where only a few of the population can afford to buy a personal car.

The reason behind this investment is because over 35% population in Rwanda uses a car-sharing service. Volkswagen is planning to focus on car-sharing/ride-hailing businesses rather than selling new cars.

One of the biggest players in the ride-hailing market is Uber. But Uber is illegal in Namibia due to concerns over tax avoidance and foreign profiteering. But the country has its local taxi-sharing system known as Windhoek, and so does Uganda, the country has Kiira EV Smack and Kayoola Solar Bus system.

Africa currently has more than 50 e-ridesharing services in 21 countries with limited coverage. E-ridesharing is still unaffordable for lower-income groups in the continent, however, new solutions are addressing these issues and hitting the market such as ZayRide, Sendy, and Mondo Ride

Maas and integrated technology:

Companies are improving their transit services by offering ICT options such as in Kenya, Flashcasts uses GPS to track vehicles in real-time.

Another company is Whereis, which combines the data of formal and informal transport systems containing routes, fares, or frequency so the commuters can easily plan their journey.

Peer-to-peer car sharing in Africa:

Carpooling is the most popular method of African shared mobility. South Africa-based Jumpin Rides came into the market in just 2016 but now it has a community of more than 11,000 users. Jumpin Rides is a peer-to-peer platform that connects private car-owners with the commuters who are going the same way, and they just have to bear the fuel expenses. This way they can complete their journey in a more cost-effective way.

Another such carpooling company is Nigeria-based Jekalo. Jekalo allows drivers to set their own destinations at any time,  unlike Uber which only allows them to do that twice a day.

Electric vehicles in Africa:

The African shared mobility market is gradually becoming electrified. Uganda is pioneering its way in the design of electric cars, while Kiira Motors Corporation in South Africa currently leads in the market with the highest number of electric vehicles.

Well, the biggest challenge EVs face in Africa in general and the Sub-Saharan region in particular is the reliability of the power supply and its cost. In 30 out of 48 countries of Africa, electricity blackouts occur on a daily basis, and electricity prices are also more than double those in the US or China.

However, most African countries are now looking to renewables alternatives of electricity generation with increasing their solar and wind grid capacity. Also, EVs in Africa are running on battery storage which is quite an effective solution to decrease the constant dependency on active charging.

African bike-sharing market:

Bike-sharing in African cities has lagged behind due to the lack of dedicated infrastructure. In most of the countries of Africa, there are very few bike lanes and the lack of bicycle lanes puts cyclists in danger who are fighting for space on the highway against bigger vehicles.

Marrakech was the first African city to get a dedicated bike-share program called Medina Bike in the year 2016 with the support of the United Nations, to reduce traffic jams and air pollution.

Mobike, the world’s largest smart bike-sharing platform, also released a bike-sharing scheme in Nairobi in May 2018. The bikes were also part of a bike-sharing showcase planned as a part of Africa Clean Mobility Week.

Drone technology in Africa:

The drone is a relatively new but fast-evolving transport solution in Africa. As many regions of Africa such as Tanzania, are extremely rural and remotely located, which separates the people of that area from vital services, medicine, or essentials.

That’s the reason why the Tanzanian government has teamed up with UNICEF and the World Bank to deploying drone technologies in the region to provide support and growth to the local communities.

Zipline and Vayu are such drones that are being used to make medical supply deliveries in the remote areas of East Africa, such as the Lake Victoria basin, which is home to almost 35 million people.

When the factors responsible for particular service change, it effectively affects the demand of the service. During the summers, there is a surge in the demand for AC servicemen. Similarly, when it pours, the demand for on-demand cab services increase. There are certain set factors that produce the demand. Your app needs to modify itself to match the surge in demand.

However, we have often seen how during a peak sale season, the ecommerce stores tend to receive maximum footfall but, they are not able to match the increasing demand. The servers fail and in certain cases the malware hits them badly, thus leading to poor experience.

Grab, a startup offering unmatched on-demand services, recently experienced a surge in demand when the rains poured in SouthEast Asia. This led to an increase in the on-demand taxi services in the particular location. The engineers, handling the backend of the cab service, seemed to have a tough day managing the peak hour traffic during this time, which lead to experience issues. Eventually, Grab found a way to manage the demand, and understood that they need to understand the factors responsible for performance of the app as well as increase in demand.

Here, we will take you through the steps Grab took to manage the demand, and how the developers enhanced the app performance.

The Challenges Grab Faced

  • The company had to note all the events that led to an increase in the demand. For instance, there were local events during which the public transport, especially cab services were in demand. Secondly, in case the local transport broke down, people preferred using the cab. The company had to keep tab on all the conditions that led to the increase
  • During surge, there was a lack of available drivers, which led to issues managing the traffic. The increased load and the lack of availability to manage the load led to situations that affected the app performance.

What Grab taxi booking app did to Manage the Demand Spikes?

The company was clear they wanted to manage the increase in demand without affecting the app performance, and they did it.

  • Worked on a concept: The initially worked on a concept that was similar to circuit breakers. The concepts were short circuiting and adverse conditions
    • In case of short circuiting, the app would perform minimal processing on a particular booking made by the customer, which would eventually reduce the load on the system
    • Adverse conditions would involve a large number of unfulfilled requests for a particular service within a small period of time for a particular location.
  • Designing the Filter: Based on the above concept, the designed a Spampede filter, which helped them manage the traffic spikes
    • The first aim of the company was to identify the requests that have not been allocated by the app. This could be owing to unavailability of the drivers in the particular location or because of overload on the server
    • The app backend then tries to go precise with the location using particular algorithm, already fed into the system. The app is not using any smart technology or sensor for the particular algorithm. They have utilized ways in which CPU efficiency can be increased and the memory usage reduced. The aim is to make an algorithm that is efficient and fast
    • The next is to calculate the time for the requests. For instance, the requests are ever-evolving and the factors affecting them like traffic, driver availability and passenger needs change. That’s why the app needed an effective way to manage the unallocated requests and identify the time stamp for the same. They used Unix Timestamp, as it is efficient and saves a lot of time and CPU processing power.
    • Once the timestamp and location have been identified, using Redis key the app keeps a track of the unallocated requests
    • The idea is to allow the app to go live again when there is capability to allocate the requests. The app will keep studying all the factors and parameters, comparing them to the Spampede parameters. Once the maximum limit has been reached, the processing will be stopped. Till then, the allocation for the requests will continue.

Lessons to Learn from Grab for Taxi booking app development

Grab has evolved and has learnt to manage the growing traffic. There are terrific lessons that you can gain from this algorithm that they built to manage the traffic.

  • Keep Evolving: Once you have defined an app solution, it doesn’t mean you have done it all. You will keep learning on-the-go, while your app is being used by the customers. That’s precisely why you should not stagnate with app development. As a company offering on-demand services, you will feel challenged multiple times. You will learn from your experience, and you need to incorporate the learning to devise the new app version.
  • Design for Experience: The users of your app need to stay engaged and should enjoy a good experience, if you want them to stay on your app longer. However, if you are not able to manage the demand or, you are unable to offer them the experience they are looking for, then you will not be able to retain them longer. Always, design for the experience of the users. Understand how they use the app, what type of usability factors are important for their engagement, and accordingly design the mobile app solution
  • Enhance Performance: The key to user engagement and growth of your business is performance. Make sure you have minimal to no downtime with your app. The users should be able to access and avail the app services at all times. This will help you increase customers and conversions for your business.

Summing Up

Grab is one of the leading on-demand mobile app solutions and Taxi booking app solutions because they keep looking for gaps in their service, request for customer feedback and work on them to deliver impressive experiences. They changed the algorithm and instead of increasing the CPU processing, they improved their efficiency.

Larger user base, affordable technologies, and a more refined business model are changing the game of the taxi booking app business. It has become easier for entrepreneurs to launch the taxi booking app and acquire a decent number of users.

With the inception of many new taxi booking startups, successful funding rounds and big players showing interest in newbies, the global taxi booking app market has been witnessing an upward tendency.

According to Bloomberg, Indonesia’s on-demand service app Gojek has announced that they have purchased a minority stake in the local taxi operator Blue Bird for a whopping $30 million. People with the knowledge of the matter said that Gojek has bought a 4.3% stake in Blue Bird.

Though this is significant news for the global taxi booking app providers and entrepreneurs planning to build taxi booking app, this isn’t the first time when a big player has shown interest in local taxi booking app startup. In the past, many global taxi booking app providers have acquired local startups in astonishing deals.

But, such news clearly depicts the potential of the local taxi booking apps. Gone are the days when local taxi booking apps couldn’t break even after 1 year of the business. Now, it is a child’s play to put your taxi booking app business on the radar of investors, users and big players.

Sensing the opportunity, if you are planning to build a taxi booking app like Blue Bird, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, we will discuss everything you need to know to build a taxi booking app like Blue Bird, along with the cost of development.

What is so earth-shattering about Blue Bird?

Blue Bird is the Indonesia-based taxi booking app, launched by Blue Bird Group. After experiencing the initial success, Blue Bird Group has extended its services, from regular taxis to executive taxis, limousines and car rentals, bus charters, and logistics. Currently, Blue Bird is running its taxi booking app business in 7 major cities of Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Medan & Lombok.

Blue Bird is Indonesia’s largest taxi company with more than 30,000 vehicles and around 50% of market share. It has managed to win the trust of the users by providing taxi drivers with the training and professional development courses.

What are the new features Blue Bird has added in the app?

Despite the fact that Blue Bird has launched Indonesia’s first GPS-enabled taxi booking app back in 2011, it started losing its novelty after the inception of many other similar apps. So, the Blue Bird team has recently decided to revamp its app to add missing features and meet the new laws imposed by the government.

Now, users of the Blue Bird app can choose to pay the drivers with or without cash. To facilitate easy payment options, Blue Bird has tied up with Gojek for its GoPay service.

They have also added some more privacy features. One of the most groundbreaking privacy features is the hidden customer mobile number on drivers’ app.

Moreover, an ‘advance booking’ feature is yet another feature they have accommodated in the latest version of the app.

How can you start an online taxi booking business by building a taxi booking app like Blue Bird?

Starting an online taxi booking business like Blue Bird is easy if you follow a few simple steps. These steps include a market study, business plan, permit, funding, app development, and management.

  • In the market study, you have to study the characteristics of the market. You have to identify the top rivals, potential users, opportunities and challenges associated with the market. This market study will help you to draft the best business plan.
  • In the business plan, you have to draft the possible ways to overcome challenges as well as ways to seize the opportunities. You also need to find the loopholes in your rivals’ top business processes. Additionally, you must decide on the business model. You are also required to list out the requirements of the potential users and features which can do justice with their requirements in the best possible way. While listing out the features, you have to take driver app features, user app features and admin panel features into account.
  • Once you have an extensive business plan, you can apply for the permit. In the permit application, you have to fill out information of your business which you have already drafted in the business plan.
  • Once you acquire the permit, contact the investors and bag the decent amount of funds as you will need money to build a taxi app, run a marketing campaign, bring drivers on board, and manage other day-to-day operations.
  • Later, you can hire a modern taxi app development company which can build the unsurpassable taxi app without charging too much. After running a pre-app-launch marketing campaign, deploy the app in the market.
  • You are not done yet. Once you start getting users and drivers, you have to maintain an appropriate supply-demand ratio. If the demand in one area is very high, and your drivers are serving in other areas, you will surely lose users. (Advanced features like Surge pricing and heat map help you to achieve an appropriate supply-demand ratio. )

Will your online taxi booking business be successful? Validate now.

Generally, two types of people jump into the taxi booking business market. One is entrepreneurs and another is fleet owners. Both of these business seekers have different resources but the same goal. Entrepreneurs do have only a business idea and a hope to close funding rounds. Whereas, fleet owners do have existing users, funds, drivers and even vehicles. But fleet owners lack the idea. Talking about the business goal, they both want to be profitable and dominate the market.

But do you know what it takes to be profitable and dominate the market? You need the fusion of the resources an entrepreneur has and the resources a fleet owner has. Which means, one can easily be successful in the ever-growing taxi booking app market if he owns an idea, funds, users, and drivers. (Here, idea and funds you require before kicking off online taxi booking business and users and drivers you require after kicking it off.)

Careem taxi, based in Dubai has now expanded its operations in over 100 cities in 14 countries in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. In the year 2018, the company was valued at over $2 billion. Careem sustains an independent brand and operates separately.

Careem has proved to be an everyday Super App for the region of over 600 million people that extends from Morocco to Pakistan. The area had missed out largely on the transformational power of the internet revolution. Because of the Careem app, people got access to transport and critical infrastructure.

Recently, the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai has announced the launch of Hala e-hailing service as a joint venture with Careem. They have halted the economy taxi services of Careem Go and Uber X. Now, forming the joint venture, Careem will take up the bookings of over half of the RTA taxis. Careem will expand Hala services to other markets where they already have their services.

People in Dubai have started booking the RTA taxis from Careem mobile app from September. Approximately 5,500 taxis were available for bookings via the app. These bookings will not have a multiplier price surge like the usual ones. Instead, they will be charging AED 8 as the starting price during regular hours and during peak time, they will charge AED 12. They are charging a cancellation fee of Dh12 if the driver has been made to wait for over three minutes.

Clemence Dutertre is the CEO of Hala. In addition to the Hala services, people will also get the benefits of Careem’s loyalty program if they make their bookings via the Careem app.

The Hala ride-booking service will be executed across all seven RTA franchisees. They are including more than 50 percent of the 10,000 taxis currently running on the road. Hala is planning to extend the services to combine all Dubai taxis by early 2020.

Careem and RTA are testing out the booking services since May. During the pilot phase, they were successful in cutting down the time between booking and taxi arrival from 10 minutes to 3.5 minutes. The venture into e-booking also suggests that the popular call centers would be ultimately phased out.

The Hala partnership among Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Careem will permit customers to book a Dubai taxi on the Careem app and has got it logged its millionth trip booked by the e-hailing service.
