In a piece of news shared by the company on February 25th 2020, it was known that Grab has raised $856Mn in funding. Earlier, there was news that there could be a possible merger between Grab and Gojek however, Gojek has been in denial of this news.

Grab the super app will use the funding to build a long-term and sustainable business. The company is all set to use the funding to improve their financial services and payments businesses.

Early on, Grab was working on its own payment system known as Grabpay, which was typically developed for the Indonesian markets. The company is currently involved in R&D that can take it ahead of its competition.

Grab is the number of competitors of Uber and is not just into ride hailing structure, but also into food delivery, payments as well as insurance products and more. Akin to Uber, it has followed a lot of products, and is offering ease and convenience in this structure.

The app was built with the unique idea of organizing the ride hailing service in southeast Asian countries. It is currently spread across 8 countries in this region. They not only allow you to hire taxis, but also private cars, shuttles, bikes and other modes of transport. Gradually, the company spread its wings into other segments as well.

Grab is looking at a future where it will become the one-stop shop for almost all the convenience needs expressed by the countries located in southeast Asia. It will encompass entertainment, finance, transport and other needs, and become one major super app.

If you are into on-demand transport and want to devise an app that works like Grab, but is not necessarily into other businesses, then you need to work on features that bring in a difference. You will need to work on the single solid idea and combine it with the features and interface to offer the guaranteed success.

The Features You Cannot Miss

#1 Social Sign-up

Most people have a social media account. It is time to allow them to use their accounts and sign up to the Grab app. Instead of making them go through a long registration process, which is time consuming and takes a toll on you, you need to get them to use their social media and Google accounts to sign-up. Ask for permission before you use the details they have shared in these accounts. Once you have them signed up, you have the basic details required to create the profile and they have the convenience of signing in without filling out the long forms.

#2 Push Notifications

To keep the user engaged on your app, you need to make sure you are offering them all the particulars and details of the new venture you might start, the discounts you are offering, a new offer that you have come out with and other things. You should also keep them updated about the whereabouts of their driver, the details of the taxi or vehicle they have hired and all the other important facts including “the ride is here” using these notifications. It will help you keep the user engaged. It will also help you win over the audience and keep them loyal to your app.

#3 Track your Ride

From being able to track your ride’s whereabouts to knowing if the driver is taking the right route to your destination, you are able to keep a tab on the location in real-time. As a rider, you know when to expect your driver at the doorstep. You can call using the app, in case your driver has not moved from the location. apart from this, you will be able to keep up with the safety needs by tracking your ride while moving to your destination. This is essentially why you should include the feature in your mobile app.

#4 In-app Payment

This feature is a must for all the modern apps as it allows the app user to know if they can make the payments on-the-go or not. For instance, if you have cash issues or, you need to make payment using your wallet, it is possible with the in-app payment system. They allow you to make the payments in-time, and you wont even have to go out of the app to complete the payment.

Payment integration is crucial to app development, and it will streamline all your needs.

How to Define a Good Solution?

It is critical that you define an essentially good and differentiated solution to win over your target market and maximize the conversions. Here are a few things that can help you with the solution.

  • Begin with the customers: When you think of the solution, and you don’t think of the customers who are going to use the solution, you may not plan well. The idea is to make the app intuitive and friendly for the end users. For instance, when devising an app solution for the South East Asian markets, you need to make it compliant with the regulations and should make the overall taxi sharing affordable and convenient. most people in this part of the world look for a sustainable mode of transport. You should ideally offer a solution that meets their goals. When defining an on-demand taxi app, make sure you have understood the customer’s requirements, and have aptly defined an app solution for them.
  • The features: The in-app features play an important role when defining an app solution for the target market. You need to introduce features that require a lower learning curve, and are intuitive in nature. You should ideally define features that have already been used, collaborate with other app APIs to make the use easy and effective. The idea is to increase the usability and make it all the more convenient for the end users.

Summing Up

There is a tough competition along the road for the on-demand taxi businesses. If you are planning a solution specifically for the southeast Asian markets then you need to think through the ways in which you can organize the market, and make it more efficient.

Uber’s business in Southeast Asia has been acquired by Grab. Later, Vietnam has seen a number of new ride-sharing platforms. These ride-sharing platforms are both foreign and local. These also include existing taxi operators keen for a slice of the growing market.

How to Starts Ride-Sharing Business in Vietnam Opportunities and scope & Ride-Sharing App Development Cost and Estimation

The Aber app was launched in Ho Chi Minh City which is the biggest market in Vietnam for ride-sharing platforms. Aber was developed by a few young engineers in Vietnam. They were studying in Germany.

The Aber app was first launched in Hanoi which is the capital city. The company along with Grab and Uber has promised that they will not be raising any charges during the rush hours. Many people criticize the high charges made applicable for ride-sharing during the rush hours.

Aber provides six main services which include Aber Bike, Aber Car, Aber Truck, Aber Travel, Aber Business, and Aber Express. The travel service targets local and foreign visitors. The driver of the vehicle also serves as a city guide. The company is also training the drivers in English language and other tour skill.

According to Huynh Le Phu Phong who is the business development director, the international travelers to Vietnam grew 29% year on year to 13 million people. Aber’s full form is Am Besten Fahrer in German or Absolute Driver in English.

The company’s system has a German technological platform. They have their own map that is independent on Google. Huynh said the startup has the technology, financing, and human resources to develop, and intends to expand into neighboring markets by 2020.

Google recently announced that Southeast Asia’s ride-hailing market has increased quadruple since 2015, and will be worth $20 billion by 2025. Grab is the most prominent player today and is accessible in some 200 cities following the Uber takeover.

Vietnam is experiencing more accelerated growth in the area than other parts of Southeast Asia. The number of businesses offering services through Grab and Uber has risen from 233 to 491 in the last two years, according to the transportation ministry.

Domestic startups and the regional companies as well, are racing into the market. Go-Jek has also launched its services in Vietnam and has jumped in to join the competition. Another ride-hailing app from Mpos Vietnam Technology called Fastgo is also being the next one in the race. Mpos Vietnam Technology is a subsidiary of Nexttech which is a Vietnamese technology group involved with e-commerce, e-logistics, and fintech. The company has been inaugurated in Hanoi and strives to have five million users and 20,000 drivers by 2020, with services in eight important cities offering taxi and limousine services.

VATO is another app developed by Phuong Trang transport company. The app entered the market by the end of June. There are more than a dozen businesses that will soon be competing with each other in the market. Indonesia-based Go-Jek, China-based Didi Chuxing, and Singapore-based MVL have all stated intentions to join Vietnam’s transportation market.

The local governors have supported startups and surviving taxi operators to start their own apps to challenge Grab’s powerful position in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese operators are expected to offer comparable apps to compete reasonably in the market. Nguyen Hong Truong, the former deputy minister of transport said while backing the startups in Vietnam.

Grab faced a few legal headwinds over the Uber merger. Hanoi started an inquiry into the deal. Grab stated that the market share of the company in Vietnam is below 30%. However, the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) put Grab’s market share at over 50%. Later, Grab got permission to run 5-year programs running until 2020 in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh city, as well as Quang Ninh and Khanh Hoa provinces.

Grab is going to concentrate and put its efforts on Vietnam with a $500 million investment. They are planning to grow its activities in the country over the next five years. Grab has not just remained as a ride-hailing company. It has grown to much more than that.

The organization has matured as a “super app” which can be operated to order a ride, order food from restaurants, make payments, get insurance products, loans, and other such activities. The company is precisely dominant in Southeast Asia.

The company lately declared that it would employ some of the $7 billion that it has raised till today to speculate on Indonesia. Grab is planning to invest $2 billion in the Indonesian market to improve the country’s transportation infrastructure.

The government in Indonesia is backing the move. The ride-hailing company is grabbing this opportunity to gain market share. And with today’s investment, Grab is actually doing the same thing at a smaller scale in Vietnam. Grab is taking the help of the government officials once again. It has declared a “Tech for Good” road map in the country that should promote Vietnam’s economic expansion at a great speed.

Grab intends to present work possibilities in 63 cities in order to combat unemployment. The company is finding drivers, delivery persons, and merchants to hire. These people will be able to check out the credit and insurance products. But, this plan is only going to work out if the company is able to get enough customers over the long term in those cities.

The company is also planning to spend on local startups through GrabVentures. Grab will also start schedules to enhance digital and financial literacy. Eventually, Grab plans to share data with local governments. They wish to tackle traffic gridlock and pollution.

Grab is now quite influential in Vietnam. For example, GrabFood now handles 300,000 food deliveries per day. There is a 400% rise in gross merchandise volume throughout the first half of 2019. Grab drivers have made close to $1 billion in profits over all these years.

Grab is a Southeast Asia’s number one multi-service app. Grab is a Singapore-based technology company which offers its services in Singapore and neighbouring Southeast Asia. Grab is the region’s first “decacorn” which means a startup with a valuation of over US$10 billion. According to sensortower, Grab is the second most downloaded ride-sharing app in the world after Uber, in the year 2018.

Story behind Grab

Anthony Tan came up with an idea of creating a taxi-booking app for Southeast Asia similar to the model that existed in the US. He is the youngest of the three brothers of the family that operates Tang Chong Motors and are the authorized distributors of Nissan cars in Malaysia.

He was inspired by Garrett Camp’s ride-sharing concept, Anthony took up the project while he was studying at Harvard Business School. The project, however, seemed difficult to be implemented but won second place at the Business Plan Contest at Harvard Business School. The same app was also selected as the finalist at Harvard’s Minimum Viable Product Funding award.

In 2012, Anthony Tan quit his position as the head of marketing of his family business and launched “My Teksi” app in Malaysia which is called “GrabTaxi” in other countries. Anthony’s classmate, Tan Hooi Ling who was a consultant at Mckinsey & Company drew a business plan for the promotion of the mobile app. My Teksi received an initial grant of $25000 from Harvard Business School and Anthony’s personal capital. He became the CEO of the company and after a lot of failures, he met with a taxi company who had a fleet of only 30 taxis decided to give him a chance.

According to TechCrunch Grab has recently gained the SoftBank Vision Fund. It announced that it has pulled $1.46 billion investment from the super fund. They want to use the money to enhance the super app strategy. The app’s strategy is to become a daily app for every Southeast Asian customer.

The deal has taken Grab’s ongoing Series H round to $4.5 billion. The investors who are included in that round are Toyota, Booking Holdings, Microsoft and Hyundai. This deal denotes that Grab has now raised over $7.5 billion to date. As per the last valuation, Grab was valued at $11 billion. According to the new reports, Grab is now valued at $14 billion.

Grab-fundraising-journey
The motto

Grab’s motto is to bring people together. They want to provide more employment opportunities and make travelling comfortable and safer for everyone. They try to solve real-world problems with technology and efficient solutions. They believe the user needs do not stop only at transportation, hence, in order to try and help everyone in every way they came up with the idea of a multi-service app with the aim of moving forward together.

They believe the drivers are partners and hence the drivers have an app called GrabDriver through which they can check and complete their rides.

Locations in which Grab is currently active

In 2014, Grab moved its company headquarters from Malaysia to Singapore and later Anthony Tan also acquired Singaporean citizenship. Grab has its services active in Singapore and other Southeast Asian nations Malasia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
