According to Pitchbook, The food delivery app market in the world is expected to grow up to $16.6 billion by 2023. Even this growth is Predicted to achieve through international expansion in general and Latin America in particular. By seeing the latest market activities, this prediction seems to be turning in to reality.

This week, Latin America based leading food delivery company iFood and Hero-owned food delivery company Domicilios.com have declared their merger. The merger still needs regulatory approval, will be expected to take on Bogota based hometown leading company Rappi Inc. Rappi just last year received an investment of $1 billion from Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and became the largest Latin American venture.

Why global companies are more interested in expanding the business to Latin America?

Certainly, a combination of many factors makes Latin  America a perfect market. Let’s take a brief overview of all the factors.

  • Income disparity:

Though wage disparity in Latin America has improved over a couple of years it is still significant. According to the World Economic Forum, the richest 10% of people of Latin America are holding  71% of the region’s wealth. As a result of this inequality coupled with the latest mobile technology, digital on-demand services have got popularity.

  • Metropolitan population:

From 47 megacities in the world, 6 are found in Latin America: Sau Paulo, Mexican city, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Lima. Since people of metropolitan cities are exposed to urban lifestyle enables delivery companies to focus on a particular area as a startup and then expand gradually from city centers outskirts. These efforts of companies lead them the growth in the region.

  • Infrastructure:

Since the region is lacking effective public transport infrastructure encourage people to depend on the private mode of transportation which leads to heavy traffic problems. This is the major factor for rising on-demand delivery apps.

On-demand delivery companies have taken advantage of this traffic congestion and offer speedy delivery by motorcycle, bicycle or walking. This has also reduced the overhead costs of companies. The average delivery charges for a Rappi order is US$1.

  • Technical infrastructure and VC investment:

The technology industry of Latin America is thriving as consumers are coming digital through apps and entrepreneurs are grabbing that opportunity and offers the connectivity.

In the first half of 2019 VC investment in Latin American startups was totaled USD 2.6 billion. Technology is capturing every industry in Latin America from banking and education to travel and food delivery.

Sustainability of the Latin American market opportunity:

Despite all the current opportunities visible in on-demand delivery businesses in Latin America, the question of sustainability and profitability still remains unresolved.

There are many food delivery apps already holding a significant market share in Latin America. But Softbank’s billion-dollar investment on Rappi and Uber is also showing an interest in Cornershop are signs that the global delivery giants are interested in the region as well.

The on-demand industry will undoubtedly grow exponentially in Latin America. Powerful global players can surely overtake the market with their experience and local players can use region familiarity and local support to not only be the go-to option for consumers but to run profitable and sustainable regional businesses.

How Covid-19 affected the Latin American food delivery market?

The covid-19 outbreak has infected more than 1000,000 people across the globe. To contain this pandemic suspending public activities, allowing work from home and app-based delivery are the common steps that many countries in the world are taking. Latin American countries are no exception to this.

Figures show that Rappi is having almost 200,000 delivery people in nine Latin American countries and seen a 30% increase in deliveries as of mid-march. Most of them are supermarket orders and pharmacy orders. The company has seen a 28% rise in only pharmacy orders in Colombia after the pandemic.

Brazilian food app iFood delivers ready-to-eat meals said it is too early to measure the impact of the pandemic on its business.

Market challenges in Latin America:

Though Latin America has a wide opportunity for on-demand businesses to grow there are still some challenges that need to keep in mind to establish a profitable business there.

  • Cutthroat competition is a big challenge for both local and global players in Latin America. But consumer preferences and digital behavior vary significantly across the region which creates a great opportunity for any startup to be popular in less time.
  • There is poor address calibration and local businesses in less developed areas do not even disclose important information such as operating hours or contact details makes it more time-consuming and difficult to operate efficiently. But crowdsourcing can be helpful to overcome this challenge.
  • Cash is still a prominent payment option in Latin America, so delivery companies needed to establish cash payments as an option as nearly 30% of current on-demand orders are paid by cash only.
  • Glovo has launched 7 ghost kitchens across Spain, Argentina, Peru, Italy, and Ukraine. It is also testing dark supermarkets aka SuperGlovos to deliver bread, milk, cereal, and drinks in just 20 minutes.

Overcoming these challenges may help you to compete in the Latin American food delivery market. Existing delivery services have explored unique ways to deal with these obstacles, but continuous innovation is crucial in this region. The secondary spaces can help reduce congestion and may open the doors for the food industry to operate their businesses exclusively through delivery platforms.

iFood is perfect for ordering food anytime, anywhere. Build an iFood clone app to provide your customers with the dishes from their favourite restaurants.

Why must every restaurant have an iFood clone food delivery app?

Bad response and the tremendous stress of a long line can lead to decrements of your customers. Because of that, you can end up in a big loss in your business. Now, eateries are encountering a great success by using the ifood clone app. This app helps every guest to take their own time and clarify their orders.

The restaurants going for iFood clone app find it more beneficial for their r own online ordering and delivery service as compared to the third-party services.

One loves to eat sitting in the comfort of your home while reading their favorite book or watching a film or just chilling with your family & friends. Ordering food from the favorite restaurant at your fingertips with the help of the apps make it possible to make this dream come true. There are many food delivery apps for you to deliver food. Services like zomato, food panda, swiggy which act as a collaboration platform connecting the restaurants and customers.

Food delivery is no more called a luxury but more of an expectation than an arbitrary addition for customer foodservice operators. Previously, food delivery only contained pizza and Chinese food but now it includes every cuisine type.

The restaurant operators and delivery platform executives discussed the choices operators must make at the 2019 Food on Demand Conference. They also discussed the types of customers preferring a delivery and the future of the industry.

First-Party vs. Third-Party Deliveries:

Well, once the restaurant owner decides to deliver he must choose among delivering the food or trust a third-party platform to take their food from kitchen to customer.

Third-party platforms are favored among the customers due to their ability to gain scale with limited costs and doubled speed. Additionally, the number of resources needed to start the delivery through first-party incorporate high labor and security costs.

There is a problem of staffing in the hospitality as the booming economy is hiring full-time drivers, who could previously work for compliant third-parties. The third-party delivery systems can be expedient in towns with as few as five to ten restaurants according to GrubHub President and CFO Adam DeWitt.

Restaurant operators addressed the challenges of managing customer experience once the food has been given to a third-party delivery driver.

The companies which are looking to maintain their experiential dining must pick a partner carefully and curate the customers’ experience throughout the packaging and other brand-first elements. However, new combination arrangements can create together multiple third-party platforms and loyalty systems without devoting customer flow.

The third-party deliveries vary with providers extending from GrubHub whose platform is entirely committed to customer foodservice, UberEats. They offer cross-promotion by their transport platform to even more modest players like Waitr. These players employ uniformed employee drivers to ensure the customer experience. Each platform allows an insignificantly diverse experience and operators must determine to build an independent deal with one platform or to allow delivery through many local platforms to guarantee the broadest customer base.

How will the customers keep coming in?

People are concerned due to the increased introduction of delivery service as it could lead to significant declines in dine-in-sales.

This is troublesome as many of the third-party platforms impose high delivery fees implying the restaurant cannot boost its prices.

Studies have been carried out especially for the Food on Demand conference. These studies recommend that quite a number of people selecting the delivery do so instead of cooking at home. This could also mean an overall increase in the customer foodservice industry. This is just opposite to full replacement between dine-in and delivery. However, a notable portion of delivery customers opts for delivery in place of dining in or takeout.

The Future of On-demand food delivery

Food delivery is one of the most in vogue markets right now to earn profits. The industry is going through innovation with self-driving cars, robots, and drones which are all currently in the testing phase.

Ford joined hands with Postmates to start an autonomous vehicle pilot in Miami in the year 2018. The first step comprised of delivering retail goods from mass retailers like Walmart and Target. The pilot is set to grow to DC in 2019. They will be reaching full-scale operations in the year 2021 as predicted by Thomas Walsh, Ford’s Head of Autonomous Vehicle Partnerships.

Postmates has built Serve robots. These robots are delivering food and small retail items in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver. The robots are also becoming popular on college campuses with easily available FDA submissive buildings and a more youthful demographic that is more open to the new technology.

Google has joined hands with Guzman and Gomez which is an Australian burrito company. They are planning to launch the first victorious drone delivery service.

Though US laws do not make a huge space for drones, the team was able to test their project stateside lately delivering ice cream to a 3-year-old in Virginia.

Apart from the delivery, the changing technology will manage how food is being ordered. There are many new vehicles that are coming to be equipped with voice assistants that can order your favorite coffee and donut without having to open the window of your car.

As Paul Damico, Naf Naf Grill’s CEO said the value of the brand cannot be emphasized just by saying that Google will do the selection. Customers will be speaking a few words: ‘Hey Google order a hamburger’, but it is the operator’s job to preemptively assure customer’s specific words.

Another growing trend in food delivery apps is “ghost kitchens” or virtual restaurants. The overall idea is enabling the restaurants to operate without a brick and mortar location by using third party delivery. Virtual restaurants grow in rare forms. Current restaurants wanting to expand may use a community kitchen to test if the market is ready for their cuisine to be served.

Additionally, the virtual restaurant idea reduces obstacles to entry for new and independent restaurants looking to begin in cities with higher rents and labor costs.

One of the Fortune’s 50 Companies, Go-Jek is ranked 17th along with Apple, Unilever, and Microsoft. It is a logistic startup company based in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is the first unicorn company known as Go-Viet in Vietnam and GET in Thailand. The company operates in the Philippines and Malaysia. In February 2019 the company was valued at the US $10 billion.

The startup company Go-Jek ranks among the top 10 most powerful brands in Indonesia. It also ranks amongst the top 3 most powerful transportation brands. Go-Jek has its financial backing from investor companies like Google and Chinese internet giant Tencent.

Go-Jek has an investment in a transportation network named Pathao. Pathao is operating in Bangladesh.

Recently the Indonesian ride-hailing influential Go-Jek has invested $5 Million in the open-ended Series D round of the Indian cloud kitchen company Rebel Foods. The startup company made this heavy investment through the investment arm GoVentures. It is to be taken into consideration that Rebel Foods boasts of an assemblage of cloud kitchen brands including Faasos, Oven Story, Lunch Box, Behrouz, and The Good Bowl among others.

According to a report on MCA filings obtained by Inc42, the company has accepted an infusion of $5 million from GoVentures. The company has now acquired 667 series D2 CCPS and 100 equity shares in Rebel Foods. Until now, the company has generated $20.9 million in its ongoing series. The existing investors such as Lightbox, Sequoia, and Evolvence have participated in the same round.

Rebel’s plan to expand further

Rebel Foods was earlier known as Faasos Food Services Pvt. Ltd. The company was founded by Jaydeep Barman and Kallol Banerjee in 2010. In the year 2018, the company was rebranded as its parent entity to Rebel Foods. The company sells its products through food delivery businesses like Swiggy and Zomato as well as independently through its own app.

After the huge success of Series D round of investment, Rebel Foods is supposed to extend its network of kitchens from 200 to 500. It is also expected to expand to Dubai and Indonesia. It will also be expanding to other countries in Southeast Asia later. Moreover, it may also invest in automation and robotics. This step will help lessen manual labor in the company kitchens.

The startup was just a quick-service restaurant (QSR). It has now turned into a multi-brand cloud kitchen model. It has established the brands like Faasos, Oven Story, Firangi Bake, Mandarin Oak, Kettle & Eggs, and Behrouz under Rebel Foods. The company has opened 1,100+ internet restaurants in India across nine brands just in the last two years. It is active in more than 15 Indian cities.

Rebel’s competitors

The competitors of Rebel Foods are Biryani By Kilo, Box8, FreshMenu, UberEats and there are other food tech unicorns such as Swiggy and Zomato. According to another latest news, the hospitality unicorn OYO is said to be looking for an extension in the cloud kitchen scope with the acquisition of FreshMenu.

The startup Biryani By Kilo (BBK) was funded by IvyCap Ventures in its Series A round. Another e-sports startup Mobile Premier League (MPL) based in Bengaluru has raised $35.5 million in Series A funding round along with Sequoia India and Times Internet.

GO-JEK’s interest in Cloud Kitchen

The cloud-kitchen model comprises of delivery-only restaurants and brand. This saves the costs on real estate and at the same time use a robust logistics network to reach more households.

Go-Jek is the ride-hailing firm and it is one of Asia’s hottest startups. Rebel has tied up with GoJek to offer its cloud kitchens in Indonesia. Rebel decided to stick to its original plan despite having a huge investor interest for raising $170-$180 million. They took this decision to avoid excessive stake dilution. At the same time, they were aware of not needing so much capital.

The media reports had indicated that the Rebel Foods has partnered with Go-Jek to begin cloud kitchens in Indonesia. The Coatue Management was expected to lead the Rebel Food’s Series D round with a $120 million investment. However, there has not been any official Coatue participation until now. According to the company filings, the Rebel Foods was last estimated at $198.7 Million (INR 1,416.33 Cr) on September 30, 2018.

The company is said to receive more than 30000 orders every day. In the first year itself, the company delivered the same kitchen sales-growth of 75%. This was much higher as compared to the industry average of 10% to 15% in terms of same-store sales growth.

Scope in Cloud Kitchen sector

The speedy growth of Online Food ordering sector generates new business opportunities for the existing & future restaurants to expand their business. The Cloud Kitchens business model is the upcoming trend. We all need the food delivered to our locations these days. Most of the restaurants collaborate with online food ordering portals like Zomato, Swiggy, etc. in order to ease their ordering processes.

Cloud Kitchens have fully implemented kitchens that you can find in most of the restaurants. But they don’t have dine-in or takeaway. These kitchens run solely for online delivery services. These businesses can help you to earn more and more profits with all your food deliveries and at the same time, you can provide satisfactory service to your customers.

Build an app like Go-Jek or Develop food delivery app for your Cloud Kitchen

Because of the urbanization and higher living standards, business through online food delivery app is thriving like never before. Looking at the popularity of the on-demand delivery apps, one shouldn’t be surprised to know that on-demand food delivery market will hit the $161.74 billion by 2023.

Top on-demand food delivery app development companies are developing next-gen food delivery apps which are justifying core purposes in the most possible ways. It avails people to get rid off all annoying problems they face while ordering food on the telephone. Moreover, it upsurges employment opportunities by letting anyone be a delivery partner.

However, not all on-demand food delivery apps are earning well. Many internal and external factors are causing established food delivery apps to suspend their services. A well established on-demand food delivery service provider company named Foodpanda which is letting people order food from its own chain of restaurants recently suspended its services in India. According to a company spokesperson, they will relaunch the service after redefining the business model and expanding their facilities and kitchens.

In this blog, we will study the reasons behind its failure and what you can learn from the failure of Foodpanda for your on-demand food delivery business. But first, let’s first know about the Foodpanda and its journey particularly in India where Foodpanda struggled the most.

Insight into Foodpanda

food-panda-logo-vector-720x340

Foodpanda is Germany-based on-demand food delivery app. In 2012, it was founded by Ralf Wenzel with his three business partners. After two years of its initial launch, Foodpanda started dominating the markets of other countries. In February 2014, Foodpanda has acquired a Pakistan-based on-demand food delivery service provider company named Eat Oye, which was a major rival of Foodpanda.

Till 2016, Foodpanda made its services accessible in all major countries of the Asia and middle east. But with the advent of other on-demand food delivery apps which had a more profitable business model and industry-defined business strategies, Foodpanda couldn’t sustain its growth. In December 2016, Foodpanda was acquired by a German competitor Delivery Hero. After one year, Foodpanda’s business of India was acquired by Ola which is India-based ride-hailing giant.

► Ola’s journey with the Foodpanda

When Ola acquired Foodpanda, they decided to run the business of Foodpanda with their own chain of restaurants. Currently, Ola has 50 restaurants and four private labels. These are Flrt, The Khichdi Experiment, Lovemade, and Grandma’s kitchen. During the initial days, Foodpanda was aggressively giving a heavy discount to the users and processing 3 million orders in a month. But later in 2018, they revised its strategy as other on-demand food delivery service provider companies like Zomato and Swiggy took the Indian market by storm. Against the services and business model of Zomato and Swiggy, Foodpanda became clumsy. At last, on the morning of the 22nd May 2019, they dropped their delivery services and laid off several employees.

Why Foodpanda failed?

There was the time when Foodpanda was processing 3 million orders per month, then what went wrong for the Foodpanda that they suspended its services? Let’s find out.

» A poorly crafted business model

Unlike crowd-puller food delivery service provider companies Zomato and Swiggy which are working with thousands of restaurants to offer the food of all cuisines, Foodpanda decided to create their own network of the restaurants. With this decision, they remained limited to only 50 restaurants. They failed to provide diverse food experience to the users and so, users dodged Foodpanda as soon as they get other food delivery services which are allowing them to try different cuisines.

» Paid no heed to the local needs

In order to be successful in on-demand food delivery business, study the locality well. Foodpanda didn’t bother to find the food choices of the different localities. They continued promoting their wrong cuisines at the wrong locations. A Singapore based food delivery service provider company named Grain becomes one of the top on-demand food delivery service provider companies by offering different local foods to different localities.

» Bad user experience

Even though top on-demand food delivery app development companies like Coruscate Solutions are able to bring a personalized menu feature in the app, Foodpanda app wasn’t equipped with such kind of user-friendly features. On-demand app delivery app Grain which we have just discussed is armed with a personalized menu feature which suggests the food to the users based on their previous orders and other data of them.

» Grotty back-end

Many users have claimed that their orders have been accepted even though the restaurants are closed. Not only users but many restaurant owners have also claimed that many times they were not notified for the orders. These blunders are the result of the grotty back-end of the Foodpanda ordering system.

We at the Coruscate not only develop an error-free app but helps you to define the business model too.

Which are the technologies top on-demand food delivery app development companies use to develop food delivery app?

To make it simple, let’s divide the core functions of the food delivery app into three parts – information sharing, payment processing, and tracking.

  • Talking about the information sharing, then it is the core function of the food delivery app as it shows the information about the meal to the users. We usually call it menu. The data of the menu is not stored in the app itself, but it is stored on a database server. To collect and display the data to the users, developers have to write business logic and to use different APIs.
  • Another must-have functionality of on-demand food delivery app is payment processing. This is one of the major requirements of the food delivery app which demands the highest ever accuracy. To make it error free, all top food delivery app development companies are integrating a good payment gateway and payment processor in the app. But choosing a suitable payment gateway according to the app requirements is not a cakewalk. There are lots of best practices an app development company has to perform to get the perfect payment gateway. If developers of the food delivery app development company are not intelligent enough, unlike developers of the Coruscate Solutions, they will end up integrating inappropriate payment gateway in the food delivery app.
  • All the top food delivery apps are equipped with live tracking to deliver a best-in-class user experience to the users. Developers use Google map API to enable live tracking feature in the food delivery app.
  • Talking about admin features, business intelligence plays a big role. BI enabled admin panel gives the predictive views of business operations. BI includes features like reporting, online analytical processing, analytics, and process mining. BI features help app owner to identify, develop and create new business opportunities with the help of structured and unstructured data. Coruscate Solutions is one of the on-demand food delivery app development companies which has earned expertise in integrating features of the business intelligence in the admin panel.
