San Francisco based Spin, recently acquired by Ford, announced its expansion plans. The electric scooter company is all set to move out of its base to European countries specifically Germany and UK.

Ford has plans to set up the e-scooter fleet in Cologne, Germany by Spring, and in the other cities by end of the year. The company already has a set number of fleet, and with this expansion will join the top-notch companies catering to the e-scooter market like Lime and Bird.

The company had already expanded its fleet last year in US cities and are currently operating at 600% capacity. The company is looking forward to operating in the European countries, where they can offer seamless and safe experiences.

Spin will be involved in developing the product and making it more sustainable for the markets. The company will need to plan the infrastructure and other aspects in order to make their expansion experiential.

The company has not only grown in terms of the number of employees working with them, but also in terms of the operational cities, infrastructure and the investment it has gained.

The above graph shows the graph for Spin and how much funding it has received from investors. Spin and Skip are almost parallel and immediately after the top-notch e-scooter startups such as Lyft, Lime, and Bird.

The above statistics gives a clear insight into the micromobility readiness for each operator. From this, we know that Spin is not just ready, but also quite prepared to take over the market.

micromobility.jpg

According to this graph, close to 60% of the travel in US cities happens through bikes and scooters.

These statistics give a clear idea into how micromobility is evolving and enhancing the mobility of the people in US.

Let’s first see the reasons why e-scooter apps are popular, and what benefits they derive from these solutions.

Benefits of e-Scooter sharing business Apps

  • Manages a sustainable environment. When it comes to e-scooters, they tend to help manage the environment, helps you commute with in an environment friendly manner.
  • The second reason a lot of people opt for e-scooters is because they are quite affordable. You get to spend less, ditch the traffic and reach your destination on-time. Moreover, you don’t need to worry about locking the scooters, as they are done through the app, once you mark the end of the ride

Strategies to Devise a good E Scooter Sharing Business App

The above graph shows the market share increase for the e-scooters according to the battery type.

The marketshare for Spin is increasing and matching that of Bird and Lime.

When devising an e-scooter mobile app from the scratch, there are a few things you need to consider.

#1 Offer Convenience and Safety

This is a lesson that you can learn from Spin. Evolving from a market where there is limited need for e-scooters and with great levels of permissions needed to operate, Spin decided to offer top-notch scooters that would break the existent players. They were ready to seek permissions, and started their services in a single market. They wanted to offer convenience while following all the regulations and permission needs. The real need was to offer a safe and clear solution to the end users. Once the users received a good solution that was safe, comfortable and accessible, there were more users and the market share grew. Today, after getting a good investment, and enjoying decent amount of market share, the company has decided to grow. They are growing on the same principle- comfort and safety.

#2 Come as an Alternative

When you are devising an e-scooter app solution in a new market, then you need to identify the common transport solutions, and know how these solutions are being charged. It becomes important that you offer your solution as an alternative to the existing solution, one that is both affordable and available.

This way, you will be able to break the market, and increase your share. If you check the above statistics, then you will see that the market share for e-scooters and bikes is close to 60%. The reason majorly being they are affordable and impressive solutions.

Things to Consider Before Developing e scooter sharing App for your business

How to Make an e scooter App Like Spin, Develop Alternative app of Spin, Spin alternative app features to consider

As a new business entrant, you need to consider a few things before getting started with the e-scooter app solution.

  • Study the e-Scooter Market

When Spin started out, they studied the entire San Francisco market, learnt the discrepancies that existed, and also understood what needs to be followed in this market. This in-depth study allowed them to not only exist in this market, but also grow impressively. As a result, you will see that Spin became a major player in US.

As a new entrant, you need to study the existing market, the players and what they are offering. A thorough analysis of the gaps and the competition will help you realize what you need to offer to be able to stand out. It will take a few months to really understand the market, which will help you derive the best solution.

  • Infrastructure Definition

When you are done with studying the markets, you need to understand whether the available infrastructure is set for the e-scooter solution you are offering or, you need to come up with a new infrastructure. Is there availability of e-scooters or, you need to set up charging hubs? Ask yourself as many questions regarding the infrastructure as possible before you get started with the actual development. When you have the infrastructure, you will know what all things you need to add to the app model.

  • Incorporating the Features

The last thing you need to consider is the features you will need to incorporate into the mobile app. You will need to sit with the competition analysis report, identify the gaps and accordingly define the advanced features for your app. Don’t forget, there are certain features that are must-have and should be part of your application.

Summing Up

Spin is definitely growing its market share, and getting expansion ready. Only after they thoroughly invested in one market, got the right amount of investment and backing, did they decide to expand.

When you want to expand your e-scooter business or, you wish to start new a e scooter sharing business, there are a few things you need. The first being a solid backing in terms of investment and the second having a strong technology partner for E scooter app development and to make it digital.

Tier Mobility recently acquired Coup’s electric moped, which shut its shop last year. This acquisition was made to achieve the single goal of offering sustainable mobility solutions to the end users. Along with the 5000 mopeds, Tier Mobility has also taken over the charging infrastructure developed by the e scooter company.
The idea is to go from offering e-scooter solutions to e-mopeds, using the experience and expertise gained from the e-scooter segment.

Tier Mobility, based out of Berlin, was devised with the single goal of offering affordable and sustainable as well as short distance ride solutions to the market. It is currently located in 55 cities across 11 countries.

As can be seen from the way Tier Mobility has grasped the market, and how it has redefined sustainability, acquiring Coup will help it reposition its image and gain a better reach. Moreover, it also showcases how accepting people are of the e-scooter segment. In fact, in most countries it is a welcome idea, as it gives independence to the users, and allows them to commute the entire distance at an affordable rate.

What are the major benefits of e-scooter?

How to Make an e scooter App Like Tier, Develop Alternative app of Tier, Tier alternative app features to consider

There is a reason, apart from affordability, that has led to the increase in demand for e-scooters.

  • It is a sustainable solution. For those, who are looking for environment friendly solutions, the e-scooter seems to be an interesting concept. It will not only help people with commuting, but also prevent pollution, thus easing the environment.
  • The rides are quite affordable. The per hour charge is pocket friendly, which makes it an acceptable solution.
  • With e-scooters, you can maneuver your way through the traffic. That’s precisely why you should indulge in this solution. As they take up less space, and are quite easy to move around, you don’t get stuck in traffic.

Tips to Define an App Solution

With Coup, Tier Mobility will enhance the charging abilities for the mopeds. This simply means, you will be able to ride longer with a better charging facility. However, the most important factor that needs to be seen is how Tier Mobility plans to charge its customers.

Before getting to the nitty gritty of how the acquisition will revamp, here are a few things that you might get to learn from Tier’s e-scooter app solution.

  • Easy to Locate: The e-scooters should be easy to locate and quicker to hire. The app solution you are defining for the e-scooter business should make it easier for the users to find a dock-less scooter that is located nearby. They simply need to enter their pickup location, and the scooters around that area should be made available on the map. You need to create an app booking service that is quite similar to the cab booking apps.
  • Effortless Unlocking: When you are talking about dock-less scooters, the most important consideration would be safety. How will you ensure that the scooters are locked, and the user who has booked is the one to unlock the same? The QR code will play an important role in this. You can use the QR code unlocking technique to make it hassle-free and safe for the users.
  • Peek into the History: When you want to check the ride history and know how much you paid for a ride or where you found your dock-less scooter, it should be made easy for the customers. The user should be able to peek into the history, and should be able to view details of all the past rides.
  • Easy Payments: The payments within the app will help the users to pay for the rides, and ensure that all the rides are paid for. In fact, integration of the wallets and other cashless payment methods can help the riders to keep a tab of their payments.
  • Discounts for Engagement: If you have a loyal customer base, to retain them you ought to keep selling them better benefits with your app. You should introduce discounts and coupon offers that are specifically devised for them. you should in fact provide the customer base personalized offers that will engage them better.
  • Alerts in Real-time: The users want to know what is happening in the app, where their next ride is, what kind of offers have been devised for them, and other details. These alerts will help the users keep up with the latest happening.

As a good brand, you should use the feedback offered by the client base, and incorporate the ones that you feel are in sync with your needs. it will always benefit if you can use the right kind of feedback, and nurture your users to keep reaching out with their feedback.

How to Make Money with your App?

When you are planning an app, you not only plan the development strategy, but also the marketing and app monetization strategy. here, we will take you through the ways in which you can make money with your e-scooter app.

  • The target market for the e-scooter would be specific. In that case, you can show ads that you believe the market is interested in. These in-app ads will not only fetch good clicks, but also good revenue with it.
  • In some cases, the people in the target market would be dependent on the e-scooter for their commute. You can offer them subscriptions or annual membership, which will also help monetize your app.

Summing Up

The future for Tier Mobility is even more sustainable with chargeable mopeds that they have acquired from Coup. They will be enhancing the capability of the market and offering a competitive edge at the same time.

A basic chart for P2P payments app development cost is as follows:

If you are planning to enter the e-scooter segment, it is time to venture into this niche with a competitive distinction, one that can make you able and smart.

With Coruscate as your technology partner, you can differentiate using features that are specific to the market, and impress the users. We have an extensive experience in this segment, which helps us deliver to the user’s needs.

One cannot estimate the fixed cost of the app development, especially when the app is an e-scooter app that involves many complex modules and groundbreaking technologies.

Like a base model of the car with all basic features comes keenly-priced than a premium variant of the same car, an e-scooter app with limited features, restricted ownership, and outdated technologies costs really less than the precisely-engineered and future-ready e-scooter app which accommodates space-age features and user-centric design.

The money you should invest in the app depends on the business requirements, goals and market scenario. If the market is not intensified and you don’t have a few challenging goals, you won’t lose anything by opting for a keenly-priced app which costs you below $5000.

But talking specifically about e-scooter apps, considering the fact that the micro-mobility market is intensified and an e-scooter app and its technologies influence the permit and compatibility with e-scooter hardware greatly,  your e-scooter app should have many custom-features including many safety features.

In this blog, we will discuss why it is worth spending a few more thousand dollars on an e-scooter app to avoid falling into a legal trap and pushing your micro-mobility startup to the dead end. We will also discuss the game-changing services premium e-scooter app development companies offer to micro-mobility startups. But before all of these, let’s first study the factors which control the cost to build an e-scooter app.

Factors controlling the cost to build an e-scooter app

When an e-scooter app development company gives you the quote, they take many factors into account to decide the cost. Following are some of those major factors:

  • App development approach

Almost all app development companies can develop the same app using different development approaches. One of the reasons why they are offering many app development approaches is the diverse requirements of all different startups.

Major two app development approaches are custom app development approach and clone app development approach.

In the custom app development approach, they aggressively study the market, understand the characteristics of the market and develop an e-scooter app in such a way that it suits the requirements and characteristics of the market.

Whereas, in a clone app development approach, they simply put feature-set of a popular e-scooter app in your e-scooter app. They even copy the design of that another app.

  • Code ownership

You are not paying for the e-scooter app, you are paying for the code!

If e-scooter app development companies do not share ownership of your e-scooter app’s code with you, they can legally use the code of your app in some other app. It affects both you and the owner of that ‘other app’.

Code ownership is also very important to update the app in the future.

And since you are paying for the code and not for the app, you won’t have any way to prove ownership of the app if you are not the owner of the code!

  • Services beyond app development

Owning an e-scooter app doesn’t make you business-ready. You need manpower, e-scooter hardware, insurance and most importantly, permit.

You can fight against these business challenges by yourself. But having a business expert beside you makes a whole lot of difference.

Companies that are charging less than $5000 for the e-scooter app do not offer you the consultation – from industry experts – to acquire the permit, select the e-scooter hardware, draft the business plan, study the market and decide on the business model. (Because, these companies do not accommodate industry experts, business experts, and legal advisors.)

Whereas, there are many companies which understand the requirements of the client and offer many services beyond app development. These companies accommodate business experts, legal advisors, industry experts, and even the success managers who all work together to help you overcome business challenges associated with the micro-mobility business.

The following are some more factors which control the cost to build an e-scooter app.

  • Rider security features: These ensure the safety of the riders. Major safety features include real-time surrounding alert, speed alert, parking, and riding tutorial.
  • Admin panel features: These enable you to run an e-scooter sharing business effortlessly. Top admin panel features include user management, rider management, vehicle management, ride management, payment management, dispute management, fare management
  • App compatibility with a number of e-scooter models: ‘Cheap’ e-scooter app only supports one or two models of the e-scooter. Whereas, a premium e-scooter app supports many models of the e-scooter. Meaning, you can populate your fleet with different e-scooter models.

So, now when you know the factors playing a major role in defining the cost of the e-scooter app, let’s move ahead and understand the difference between $5000 e-scooter app and $15000 e-scooter app.

A ‘cheap’ vs ‘premium’ e-scooter app (‘$5000’ vs ‘$15000’)

What are you getting?  $5000 e-scooter app  $15000 e-scooter app
Custom app  Run your business with an app which is the replica of some popular e-scooter app!  They create a custom version of an e-scooter app with custom features, satisfying all legal norms.
Code ownership  Limited ownership  They share full code ownership as the app is built specifically for you.
Feature-set  Limited  An extensive feature-set with the scope of customization
Safety features  Basic features, not sufficient to acquire the permit  Disruptive safety features which actually help you get the permit
Admin panel features A few most common features  Unique custom-features with a bunch of filtration options and remote operation options
Consultation  You are on your own.  A team of industry experts, business experts, and legal advisors is there to save you from falling in legal trap and financial crisis
Number of e-scooter models compatible with the e-scooter app  Maximum 2  By just adding the unique number of the many different e-scooter hardware in the admin panel, you can bring them online (in an e-scooter app).
App security  Crucial data is within the reach of unwanted parties.  They follow best practices to make your app secure. A multi-layer security mechanism makes it unhackable.
Payment module  Third-party  Custom

That’s all. I hope, you have got the conspiracy of companies selling e-scooter apps under $5000 and why you should keep a safe distance from cheap e-scooter apps. If not, here is the conclusion: By spending $5000, you only receive a single ‘basic’ resource to start an e-scooter sharing business. But by spending $15000, you receive all ‘premium’ resources to start an e-scooter sharing business.

With many Canadian cities legalizing the use of e-scooters on public roads, the Canadian micro-mobility market is going through halcyon days. Many big players like Lime, Bird, and Jump have already dropped their e-scooters across tier-1 Canadian cities like Montreal and Calgary.

However, the Canadian micro-mobility market is less explored than European and American micro-mobility markets. And so, many Canadian entrepreneurs who want to start an e-scooter sharing business in Canada struggle a lot to collect very crucial data to identify the market characteristics and user groups. This lack of information many times leads them towards the dead-end from where they can’t figure out the direction to their goals.

Considering the gravity of the situation, we have previously shared many important details of the Canadian micro-mobility market in our dedicated blog (e-scooter app development in Canada). We’ve also put forth a dedicated blog containing 3 easy steps to start an e-scooter sharing business in CalgaryCanada.

Today, in this blog, we will discuss the most common questions (and their answers) all entrepreneurs have before starting an e-scooter sharing business in Montreal where the city council has already been running a pilot program after legalizing the e-scooter.

10 most crucial questions answered to successfully start an e-scooter sharing business in Montreal, Canada

Question #1: Is it a safe bet to start an e-scooter sharing business in Montreal?

The success of many global and even the local micro-mobility startups depict that a startup running an e-scooter sharing business anywhere in the world is most likely to be successful. However, there are many factors that still influence the performance of micro-mobility startups. These factors include government regulations, competition, and e-scooter-friendly infrastructure.

Talking specifically about Montreal, the government has already imposed many harsh yet clear and straightforward e-scooter laws. These clear and straightforward e-scooter laws save a lot of time and do not drag micro-mobility startups into ‘unexpected’ legal battles.

The infrastructure of the Montreal city is also e-scooter-friendly. Less congested streets, a network of the dedicated bicycle lanes and pedestrian paths make it very easy for e-scooter riders to navigate safely through the city.

And most importantly, the Montreal micro-mobility market has not been intensified yet. Only two micro-mobility startups – Lime and Jump – are running their business in Montreal. Meaning, a huge room is still available for new micro-mobility startups to maneuver.

Question #2: Will I ever acquire the permit?

A permit is the most important thing to start an e-scooter sharing business. Without it, it is impossible to drop even a single e-scooter on a public road. Though many micro-mobility startups face a challenge to acquire the permit, you can easily acquire it if you follow best practices and get help from experts.

To acquire the permit, a micro-mobility startup is needed to submit the permit application. In that permit application, a micro-mobility startup has to demonstrate strategies to obey the laws imposed by the government. The city council later takes your proposed business strategies into account to make a final decision on your permit application.

Since business strategies you have to mention in permit application cover a wide array of business processes, it is a challenging task for an individual to find out the business strategies for each business process. Hence, it is advisable to leave it on the shoulders of the experts.

There are many e-scooter app development companies like Coruscate which do not just build e-scooter apps but also help micro-mobility startups to acquire the permit.

Question #3: What are the e-scooter laws in Montreal?

  • The weight of the e-scooter should not be more than 45 kg.
  • The e-scooter should be equipped with an emergency stop switch to cut supply to the motor.
  • An e-scooter rider must be 18 years of age or older.
  • An operator should offer the training program to first-time users.
  • A rider should wear a helmet while riding an e-scooter.
  • A rider isn’t allowed to ride an e-scooter on sidewalks and roads where the speed limit is beyond 50 km/h.
  • A rider should not carry another passenger, haul the trailer or push or push any other object.
  • It is outlawed to ride a modified e-scooter.

You can view here the full list of the e-scooter laws in Montreal.

Question 4: Can I able to run the e-scooter sharing business in Winter?

In Winter, it is extremely dangerous for riders to ride e-scooters on snowy roads. Thus, the Montreal city council has banned the operation of the e-scooter sharing business in winter. You are only allowed to run your business between April 15 to November 15.

Question 5: How can I stop losing money in winter?

By simply changing the app development approach, you won’t experience any financial burden in winter. An e-scooter app subscription plan costs really less than the custom app development. During winter, you can withdraw your membership and when the mercury rises again, join the program again. This way, you won’t lose money in winter.

At Coruscate, in addition to custom e-scooter app development, we offer a subscription plan for the feature-packed white label e-scooter app which starts from just $500!

Question #6: Which one is the best e-scooter hardware I can buy in Canada?

Micro-mobility startups giving cold shoulder to e-scooter hardware generally end up affecting the user experience and increasing the maintenance cost and efforts. Proper e-scooter hardware does not only help micro-mobility startups to ensure the safety of the riders, but it also helps them to keep retention rate high and maintenance-cost low.

You can read our dedicated blog to know the best e-scooter hardware you can buy under $500 and $1000.

Question #7: How does e-scooter hardware communicate with the mobile app?

The IoT controller fitted in the e-scooter hardware establishes the connection with the backend of the e-scooter app. It then sends information of particular e-scooter to the backend of the mobile app. It also receives the information (commands) from the backend of the mobile app.

Here, it is worth mentioning that you can buy affordable e-scooters which do not come with the IoT controller. You can later buy separate IoT controllers and fit them in e-scooters.

Question #8: What are the top e-scooter app and admin panel modules?

E-scooter app modules:

  • Profile
  • Tutorial
  • E-scooter discovery
  • E-scooter booking
  • E-scooter group booking
  • E-scooter unlocking/locking
  • Fare
  • Ride information
  • Payment
  • Ride history
  • Customer service

E-scooter app admin panel modules:

  • User management
  • Rider management
  • Vehicle management
  • Ride management
  • Payment management
  • Dispute management
  • Fare management

We integrate all of these modules in the most basic e-scooter app. And when a client has a requirement to build an e-scooter app with unique features, we push the boundaries and add many disruptive features.

Question 9: What are the top ‘e-scooter app user groups’ in Montreal?

To offer personalized user experience, identifying user groups is very essential. Our business experts have ceaselessly studied the micro-mobility market of Montreal and revealed 4 most potential user groups of the e-scooter app. These are commuters, university students, tourists, and casual users. All of these user groups have different requirements and characteristics. Thus, a micro-mobility startup is encouraged to do justice with every user by adding dedicated features for each user group.

To know the list of dedicated features for each user group, you can read our dedicated blog.

Question 10: How much does it cost to build the e-scooter app in Montreal?

Coruscate is the top e-scooter app development company that has developed 10 e-scooter apps for different markets. We accommodate 100+ well-schooled app developers, app designers, IoT engineers, business experts, and legal advisors who all work parallel to make your business journey painless.

For visionary entrepreneurs who hanker after e-scooter app development in Canada, We’ve recently put forth a detailed blog where we’ve discussed the Canadian micro-mobility market and cost to build an e-scooter app in Canada.

However, considering the fact that each Canadian city has different e-scooter rules and market characteristics, we decided to leave ‘dedicated blog on each Canadian city’ on some other day.

Well, today is that ‘other day’. Today, we will discuss 3 steps you need to follow to start an e-scooter sharing business in Calgary where the city council has already legalized the e-scooters.

How to start an e-scooter sharing business in Calgary, Canada?

Following are the 3 simple steps, sufficient for leading you towards your dream – running an e-scooter sharing business in Calgary!

Step #1: Draft the business plan (very important to acquire the permit)

A business plan is nothing but a formal written document which generally contains business goals and methods on how you can achieve those goals.

But when it comes to e-scooter sharing business plan, your business plan should have additional information like e-scooter app features, your selected e-scooter hardware, business model, communication technology, manual and automatic business processes, safety features, and your strategies to ensure proper use and parking of e-scooters.

Since the government takes all these things into account before making a final decision on your permit application, a business plan containing all this additional information is vitally important to acquire the permit.

However, it is not as easy as pie to collect this much information and draft the business plan, especially when it is the first step!

How to draft the e-scooter sharing business plan?

E-scooter sharing business plan cries for many details. So, let’s split it into more steps and simplify the learning.

Step #1.1: Hire experts

Many entrepreneurs hire an e-scooter app development company to just build an e-scooter app. They manage many other important aspects of the business by themselves. These ‘unnecessary efforts’ sometimes reward them with an additional financial burden and unexpected delay.

Instead, leave it on the shoulders of experts. There are many e-scooter app development companies like Coruscate which offer services beyond app development, without charging any extra. These services include business model crafting, e-scooter selection, market study, and government permit acquisition.

Step #1.2: Study the laws

Your hired experts will then make you familiar with the e-scooter laws of Calgary and ways to satisfy each of them. Keep these rules in mind while moving to the next step.

Step #1.3: Decide the business model, e-scooter hardware, feature set

Respecting the laws, you now need to decide on the business model, e-scooter hardware and feature-set. Here, you will feel grateful to have an expert beside you.

While finalizing the business model, it is advisable to decide whether you will rely on hired staff members or gig workers to keep batteries of e-scooters charged. This decision affects feature-set to a certain extent.

Step #1.4: Apply for the permit

With hired experts, when you collect all information and prepare an extensive business plan, apply for the permit. The application to operate an e-scooter sharing business in Calgary is open until July 2020. To view the permit application, click here.

Step #2:  Wait until your hired technology partner develops your e-scooter app

As soon as you get the permit, your hired technology partner will start developing your e-scooter app. However, there are two things you have to consider here.

Step #2.1: Decide the admin panel features

The admin panel features don’t influence the permit. But they matter the most to run e-scooter sharing business painlessly. So, you have to discuss it with your hired technology partner.

Step #2.2: Send e-scooter hardware to your hired technology partner

The IoT controller fitted in your purchased e-scooter plays a major role to establish the connection and display the information of that particular e-scooter on the mobile app and admin panel. To avoid even a small bug and test the app aggressively,  e-scooter app development companies need e-scooter hardware physically available at their premises.

Step #3: Run an awareness campaign

After receiving the app and before deploying it to market, run an awareness campaign. In the awareness campaign, you have to promote the safer use of the e-scooter and proper way of e-scooter parking. This awareness campaign will indirectly promote your e-scooter app. You can continue running awareness campaigns even after deploying the app in the market.

The post-app launch awareness campaign is more affordable. By simply integrating an additional app module that shows the proper way of e-scooter riding and e-scooter parking as soon a user opens the app for the first time, you can make him familiar with the e-scooter laws very easily.

That’s it. We just have discussed the most straightforward guide to start an e-scooter sharing business in Calgary.

According to Quartz, Eric Amis – a 20-year-old- was headed home from his hotel job in Atlanta on an e-scooter. He had just pulled out of the local metro station parking lot when a Cadillac SUV crashed into him, leaving him in a life-threatening condition. Later, he died.

Amis was one of 29 people who have died in e-scooter accidents since the first wave of the micro-mobility revolution hit the USA in 2018. Each victim died after the drivers of motor vehicles weren’t able to avoid them. Many investigation reports quote the lack of regulations and safety features as the major reasons behind e-scooter accidents.

Considering the gravity of the situation, city councils are imposing some of the very harsh rules. Micro-mobility startups are also coming up with some groundbreaking technologies and app features to ensure the safety of the riders.

In this blog, we will discuss the ways micro-mobility startups like Lime, Wheels, Beam, Voi are ensuring the safety of the riders by integrating very basic yet very serviceable features in the app and upgrading the e-scooter hardware. But before that, let’s first dig deep and find out the factors contributing to the e-scooter accidents.

Most common reasons behind fatalities involving e-scooters

The following are the major 3 reasons why the number of e-scooter accidents is increasing by leaps and bounds.

  • Lack of awareness

An e-scooter is a fairly new mode of transportation. Unlike a bicycle or conventional kick scooter, an e-scooter is powered by an electric motor. The power of this motor which controls the speed of the e-scooter is managed through a throttle. Though this looks like a simple mechanism, it proves to be challenging for first-time users. Such users riding an e-scooter directly on the busy streets put their as well as the lives of the pedestrians at risk.

  • Lack of regulations

The development of the e-scooter sharing business has been so unsettled and uncontrolled that these tiny e-scooters have invaded many cities before even governments could realize. Governments not regulating the use of the e-scooters are indirectly encouraging the ruthless e-scooter riding. Amid lack of regulations, there is nothing (except for accidents) that can stop e-scooter riders from riding e-scooters dangerously.

  • Lack of safety features in software and hardware

A startup can easily employ many available technologies to ensure the safety of the riders. But for the sake of saving a few bucks, they usually give cold shoulder to those technologies and the safety features an e-scooter app development company can actualize using those technologies.

Not only software, but startups are also not paying heed at the quality of the e-scooter hardware. Many startups accommodate only conventional e-scooters in their fleets. These conventional e-scooters do not come with the disc brake, wide wheels, well-built frame, and even the front and backlights.

So, now when you know the reasons why the number of e-scooter accidents is increasing, let’s discuss how top micro-mobility startups are locking horns with this major challenge.

How top micro-mobility startups are ensuring the safety of riders?

The following are the top 4 micro-mobility startups that are offering the safest e-scooter rides by just adding a few additional features in the app and upgrading the hardware.

 Wheels:

Wheels is the USA-based micro-mobility startup which is doing pretty well even in the intensified micro-mobility market of the USA. Wheels goes an extra mile to ensure the safety of riders. It offers a very unique e-scooter hardware which is very easy to handle, thanks to fat wheels and a lower center of gravity.

Moreover, Wheels has developed a one of a kind solution to not leave a single reason for riders to not wear a helmet. Their helmet locks into the rear fencer of the bike and riders are required to unlock it for free before hopping on the bike. If a rider uses the helmet, sensors detect it and Wheels offers him the 20% discount.

To know more about Wheels, you can read our dedicated blog.

  • Lime

Lime, which is one of the largest e-scooter sharing companies, has also invented something very useful. And they had to, at least when its devices were involved in more e-scooter deaths – 11 of 29!

Lime’s sidewalk detection technology relies on the group of sensors. These sensors measure the intensity of the vibration of the e-scooters. If an e-scooter rider rides an e-scooter on the sidewalk which consists of evenly-spaced grooves, the e-scooter vibrates too much. And the sensors fitted on e-scooter predict (with proven 95% confidence) whether a rider is riding an e-scooter on the sidewalk or somewhere else.

  1. Voi

Stockholm-based micro-mobility startup Voi has launched an online ‘traffic school’ after they recorded their first fatality in May 2019. The online ‘traffic school’ lets users take quizzes on subjects like parking, traffic rules, and general e-scooter knowledge. In exchange, Voi offers riders ‘ride credits’.

We, Coruscate, add such features into the e-scooter app without charging any extra.

To know more about Voi, you can read our dedicated blog.

  • Beam

Beam which runs its e-scooter sharing business in many cities including Auckland has recently launched Beam Safety Academy. It is a program designed to teach first-time users safer e-scooter use.

Beam has also launched its next-generation e-scooter, Beam Saturn. Beam claims this to be the safest shared scooter in the country.

Additionally, Beam became the first e-scooter provider by covering its riders with accident insurance policy.

To know more about Beam, read our dedicated blog.
