Want to start e scooter rental business like Jump, Lime, Scoot or Spin? Know how to get a permit to start e scooter rental business.

How to get a government permit for e-scooter rental business like Jump, Lime, Scoot and Spin get one in San Francisco?

If you a reader from San Francisco, just install the e-scooter app of any recently permitted operator and start riding e-scooter. But if you are an entrepreneur, wishing to jump into micro-mobility movement, invest 5 minutes in this blog and know how to decode one major challenge of e-scooter rental business – getting a business permit from the government.

In this blog, you will get to know,

  • San Francisco e-scooter program
  • How Jump, Lime, Scoot and Spin have managed to get the permit in San Francisco?
  • Rules and regulations for micro-mobility operators in San Francisco ( and in other cities).
  • How to satisfy each rule and get the permit quickly?
  • How much does it cost to develop the e-scooter app? And how Coruscate helps you to get a permit?
  • FAQs about e-scooter app, hardware and micro-mobility rules

San Francisco e-scooter program

San Francisco is the home of top e-scooter rental brands such as Bird, Spin and Lime. And so, these companies deployed e-scooters on the streets of San Francisco before any major US city. But people of San Francisco didn’t adopt it well. After receiving many complaints about poor parking, injuries and dangerous driving, the SFMTA asked operators to halt the operation and started working on some strict rules and regulations for both operators and riders to confirm the safety of people.

With new rules and regulations, SFMTA opened a new round of permit applications for operators. For that round, a total of 11 operators applied and after evaluating each application, SFMTA gave permits to a total of four operators (Jump. Lime, Scoot, Spin) with some restrictions.

Here is how SFMTA evaluated each application and what are those restrictions approved operators will be facing?

How Jump, Lime, Scoot and Spin have managed to get the e scooter rental business permits in San Francisco?

As a part of the city’s longer-term permitting program for e-scooters, the SFMTA has just granted permits to Jump, Lime, Scoot and Spin to operate their e-scooter rental business within the boundary of San Francisco from October 15, 2019.

However, SFMTA hasn’t given them full freedom – there are a few restrictions which operators have to keep in mind while doing business. Initially, each permitted e-scooter rental company will be able to deploy 1000 e-scooters only, with the potential to deploy up to 2,500 after running a business successfully for a few months. Additionally, SFMTA is requiring all e-scooters to be lock-to and each operator agreed to use W-2 workers who will work full-time as well as part-time.

Application evaluation process SFMTA has put forward was very straightforward. SFMTA scored each operator across hardware standards, safety features, pricing, plan for safe parking, operations and more.

Refer to the following table to understand the application evaluation process more rationally.

Refer to the following table to understand the application evaluation process more rationally

Here, in this table, if you have noticed, SFMTA scored operators across several factors and these factors are nothing but the micro-mobility rules and regulations every local authority is expecting operators to satisfy. So, now let’s quickly discuss the micro-mobility rules and regulations imposed by SFMTA for San Francisco e-scooter business. Since all other cities follow the same structure with minor changes in the few rules, you can derive benefits from this learning even if you are not planning to start an e-scooter rental business in San Francisco.

Rules for micro-mobility operators in San Francisco (and other cities)

  • Operators should educate and train users to ride e-scooter safely.
  • Operators should promote and distribute the helmets.
  • Operators should make sure all e-scooters are properly parked.
  • Operators should suspend or block the user if he does not park the e-scooter properly.
  • Operators should provide service to low-income residents.
  • Operators should allow users to pay in multiple ways including fare discounts.
  • Operators should retrieve the e-scooter within the knowledge of two hours if it is broken.
  • Operators should regularly check the e-scooters and hire staff with the necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Operators should send user and usage data to the government. The government will use that data to build proper infrastructure for micro-mobility.

How to satisfy each major micro-mobility rule?

For a better understanding, the rules and ways to not violate it, are categorized here.

Safety

➠Basic:

E-scooter app must own a feature which demonstrates the proper ways to drive the e-scooter as soon as someone opens the app for the first time. Not only this, the app must be developed in such a way that it counts the online sessions of the users and after every 2 3 online sessions, it shows them the e-scooter driving and parking instructions either in the form of photos or GIF.

➠Advanced:

Add real-time alert and dynamic speed control. Real-time alert module alerts the user if he is approaching school, market or park. While dynamic speed control feature controls the maximum speed of the e-scooter based on the surrounding. To actualize these two features, Geo-tagging can be used.

Proper parking

➠Basic:

As soon as a rider ends the ride, shows him the guide to properly park the e-scooter. And when another user unlocks the same e-scooter, asks him about the parking method of the last user. This data seems very useless at first glance, but when it will turn into ‘big data’, it will be very helpful to find the parking patterns of users and make data-driven decisions.

➠Advanced:

When a user ends the ride, asks him to upload the photo of parked e-scooter. This data will not only help you (admin) to know whether he has parked it properly or not, but it will help other users to discover that e-scooter quickly.

Fare

Governments want you to offer e-scooter for rent at the very less fare and you want to earn more money by introducing a premium business model. So, will you overlook the rule for the sake of earning more money? Of course not. So, what is the alternative? Here it is.

Even if you continue offering affordable service, you can earn more profit per e-scooter by reducing the operational cost of an e-scooter. And to reduce the operational cost of an e-scooter, you have to make sure that any fault in the e-scooter is identified before it gets worse. For that, you can add a feature in both user app and Juicer app, which lets them report any mechanical fault in a particular e-scooter, so a team of hardware engineers can take quick action before an e-scooter which costs more than $500, stops working, completely.

➠Data sharing

To satisfy this rule, you should request e-scooter app development company to integrate a very important module in the admin panel which stores every data of users, filter it and sends it to a government authority, automatically.

How much does it cost to develop the e-scooter app and how Coruscate helps you to satisfy these rules?

FAQs about e-scooter app, hardware and micro-mobility rules

➯ Amid many reports of e-scooter riders’ injuries, is it true that e-scooter rental business is losing its charm?

Though recently many e-scooter riders met brutal accidents, it is not true that an e-scooter rental business is losing its charm. At least, after a report which says injured e-scooter riders are most often young men, without helmets, drunk or stoned.

➯ How hardware is important to satisfy the micro-mobility rules?

Governments have always been putting emphasis on rider safety and hardware is very responsible for offering a safe ride. It should be steady and reliable. Also, an operator should customize it if the geographic condition demands so.

➯ Should you develop an e-scooter app first or should you apply for a permit first?

First, you should develop an e-scooter app, but not for the urban city. You should start rolling out e-scooters with a mobile app in a small city, airport, universities or at community halls. Then after a few months of successful business, you can think about hitting the roads of big cities. Because the government will not grant a permit to you if you do not have experience of running an e-scooter rental business.

➯ How to decide the budget for e-scooter app development?

Generally, the cost of e-scooter app development depends on the number of features you ask e-scooter app development company to add into the app. So, before approaching any e-scooter app development company, do a study of the market and make a list of all necessary features only.

Rohit Kalyanpur, a person who has brought a new idea of charging the e-scooters via solar energy is being popular among the e-scooter startups. He thought it is possible to generate energy from a solar panel. These panels have long been used almost solely on rooftops and as part of industrial solar grids.

People have been previously using solar-powered calculators and lawn lights in Chicago. Kalyanpur learned about energy and work on a solar charging prototype. He first used solar energy to charge his iPhone and worked on spontaneously to check the usage of solar energy on various other gadgets.

He discovered that there were no developer tools to build a self-charging project. In the hardware projects, the developers could turn to the open-source electronics prototyping platforms. But there were no such platforms available for the solar charging projects. There was nothing that the developers could use to optimize a solar product. He has helped in building such tools.

singapore-based-electric-scooter-startup-neuron-wows-ces-solar-powered-charging-modular-docking-stations

Kalyanpur attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He became friends with Paul Couston who helped him to manage and invest the university’s $10 million green funds. Both of them dropped out of school to start their now four-person company named Optivolt Labs.

They got the impetus with the entry into the accelerator program Techstars Chicago. They kept gaining momentum since then. Kalyanpur has now received a Thiel Fellowship which is a two-year-long program that includes a $100,000 grant to young people who are interested in building new things. They even received a lot of mentorships and key introductions.

The company has raised a separate $1.75 million round of seed funding from a long list of notable individual investors. The investors include Eventbrite co-founders Kevin & Julia Hartz; TJ Parker, who is the founder and CEO of PillPack which is an Amazon subsidiary. Other investors include Pinterest COO Francoise Brougher: and Jeff Lutz, a former Google SVP.

They are into the promise of a scalable technology stack for solar integration. Though still, nascent Optivolt has now comprehended a way to provide adequate power transfer systems, a solar developer and simulation devices and cloud-based API’s to facilitate fleets of machines to self-charge in ambient light.

The e-scooters will now be charged using solar energy along with the drones, sensors and other devices. The testing of the technology will begin soon and a number of “enterprise fleets” have already signed on to work with Optivolt in pilot programs.

It is a pretty huge opportunity for many e-scooter startups. Some companies have already begun offering smaller solar-powered vehicles. There are probably several outfits that would favor finding a way to retrofit the hardware they already have in the world.

The e-scooters can use their current batteries also. The solar will not just charge the machines or e-scooters in real-time but at the same time will allow them to store some of that energy.

Optivolt’s technology “seamlessly blends into everyday products. So, there is no need to change the product design necessarily. They are excited to see how it works out with the e-scooters running on the streets. Right now, Optivolt’s highest priority is its new round of funding along with hiring more engineering talent.

Swiftmile, a Light electric vehicle charging system company that is beginning the world’s first solar-powered scooter charging platform. The platform will be launching very soon in an important US city with a national scooter operator.

The new platform is just like a gas station for the e-scooters. It allows any operator to use the regular charging stations addressing city gridlock. It can scale to sustain thousands of e-scooters from any dockless scooter company.

Fostering mass adoption

Oasis is another company that aims to provide the cities with an eco-friendly, common and modular answer for organizing scooter programs. The company’s new in-field charging program can sustain thousands of e-scooters in need of a charge while encouraging mass confirmation.

As the shared electric scooters and bikes add great new commutation option for cities. But there are problems related to parking and litter. A parking and charging system for these dockless e-scooters is a great answer to all the problems that we are looking for.

Swiftmile’s exclusive charge-management back-end can blend with any third-party scooter app. This allows riders and drivers to easily find charging and parking places for e-scooters. The installation of these charging stations is easy and inexpensive.

The program is proposed with the following:

  • Adaptors for every e-scooter makes them compatible with Swiftmile app
  • Independent quick charging
  • LED lighting for checking easy checking of vehicle availability
  • Solar and battery warehouse
  • An integrated lock and charging
  • Ready-built APIs for back-end mobile app integration
  • Lifetime assistance, support, and updates.

Swiftmile’s intends to be just like the gas stations were to the auto industry. They are becoming much important to the fast-growing micro-mobility revolution. They are acting as the peacemakers between the public, cities and scooter operators. They have built the first in-field e-scooter charging system which enables the e-scooters to be parked and charged in convenient locations, then show back up on any scooter operator’s app ready to ’roll’ again.

Charge electric scooter with solar panels

One can charge the electric scooter with any equipment that produces electricity. It is not an issue if one wishes to charge the e-scooter with solar panels. The problem is developing a circuit that transforms it to a standard socket in which one can plug the electric scooter.

The circuit can be created using solar panels, an inverter, and the rest of the circuit. But, there is a more uncomplicated option. There are charging stations offering solar charging for the e-scooters with the help of solar panels. One can even charge the e-scooters at their own place by installing the solar panel kits where it receives sunlight and plug-in the e-scooters. The e-scooter startups can have their own solar panel charging stations across the city to make it convenient for the customers to charge their e-scooters in an eco-friendly manner.

If an e-scooter rental company Flash Which re-brands as ‘Circ’ has clocked up 1 million rides in just 135 days of its initial launch, we must have to dig out its business strategies.

In this blog, we will get to know,

  • The outcome of C.Scott Smith and Joseph P. Schwieterman written a research paper on the e-scooter scenario
  • About Flash (Circ) e-scooter rental company
  • Business strategies of the Flash(Circ) to acquire remarkable growth
  • Things you need to consider while outsourcing the e-scooter app development project

On December 12, 2018, Mr. C. Scott Smith and Joseph P. Schwieterman from Depaul University issued a very important research paper on the e-scooter sharing scenario. They have examined the degree to which e-scooter rentals can satisfy the mobility need within and between one of the most congested cities of USA, Chicago. They studied how e-scooters affect the travel time, reliability and convenience of trips.

Following are the major finding of their study.

  • E-scooters can beat the private automobiles on short distance trip by reducing the traveling time by 47% to 75%.
  • Due to their higher cost over three miles, e-scooters can not surpass the public transport on longer-distance trips.
  • The demand for e-scooters can differ widely between geographical areas.
  • Users would not prefer to pay more than $1.10 per trip plus $1.33 per mile.

Insight into Flash (Circ)

Europe is the most prominent market for e-scooter rental business. Thanks to its urban infrastructure and environment-friendly people, the e-scooter rental business is more likely to be successful in European countries than in other countries. Flash (Circ) is a Berlin-based e-scooter rental company which has witnessed an overnight success with its precisely implemented business strategies. It was founded by Lukaz Gadowski and co-founded by founders of Delivery Hero which is the publicly listed online food delivery company. After a few months of its initial launch, Flash (Circ) has raised a whopping €55 million in its series A funding round which was led by Target Global.

The ambition of the founders of Flash(Circ) is to dominate the European market of e-scooter rental. In one of his interviews, Mr. Gadowski has stated that the current trend of e-scooter rental is just a very beginning. There is still room for many e-scooter rental startups to start an e-scooter rental business.

After Flash(Circ) was launched in Berlin, they quietly launched it in Zurich and since then, Flash (Circ) has expanded its business areas to 21 cities across 7 countries. Moreover, Flash (Circ) has also completed its 1 million rides recently. However, Flash isn’t the only e-scooter rental company which has passed this milestone. Another e-scooter rental company named Voi has recently announced that they have completed 2 million rides in just 8 months. Tier e-scooter rental company which was launched after Voi is also on the way to hit that number.

Business strategies of the Flash(Circ) to acquire remarkable growth

Flash(Circ) has completed 1 million rides in 4.5 months, that means Flash(Circ) is getting around 7000 requests to rent e-scooters in a single day! How? Let’s find out.

» Properly understood hardware requirement

In the e-scooter rental business, an e-scooter plays a significant role. Many countries have banned e-scooters as in recent years, fatality caused by e-scooters has reached to an alarming figure. Thus, providing a reliable and secure e-scooter turns out the most important requirement of the e-scooter rental business. Unlike other e-scooter rental companies, Flash (Circ) assembles their own e-scooters, keeping all safety features in the mind. They use rust-resistant aluminum alloy frame and large airless wheels to ensure the safety of riders and pedestrians. They also provide free insurance to the users for every ride.

» Properly designed mobile app

Now, in the last section of this, let’s be familiar with the things you need to consider while outsourcing the e-scooter app development project.

How to Make an e scooter App Like Flash, Develop Alternative app of Flash, Flash alternative app features to consider

Things to consider while outsourcing the e-scooter app development project.

To develop an e-scooter app like Flash (Circ), your hired e-scooter app development company should have exceptional knowledge of IoT engineering. An IoT integrated app establishes a connection with e-scooters and presents details of e-scooters like location, battery level, and damage level on the mobile app. In order to establish a connection between the mobile app and e-scootersMQTT protocol is being used. So, we recommend you to approach only those e-scooter app development companies which have dedicated IoT engineers.

There are lots of smart and conventional e-scooters are available in the market which you can use for the e-scooter rental business. But the problem with all available e-scooters is that they demand a little bit of customization in their IoT controller. Thus, it is advisable to go for only those e-scooter app development companies which know the ways to customize the IoT controllers.

You may think to acquire a clone app or scripts to get a quick and economical solution. But with the clone app, you can not expand the boundaries of your business as a clone app doesn’t support customization and doesn’t offer a few groundbreaking features like data analytics and AI. Instead, you can opt for a custom-built app which helps you to run an e-scooter rental business in a most possible way like Flash (Circ). However, the custom-built app requires a big investment and a longer development phase. So, we encourage you to choose a hybrid solution provider e-scooter app development company. A hybrid solution reduces the time of development and offers custom-built-app-like features. Coruscate Solutions is one of the few companies which provides a hybrid solution for e-scooter app development.

IoT technology is taking the world by storm. Almost every latest piece of innovation works on IoT technology. It is changing the way we use our day to day objects. One of the best examples of IoT is activity tracker. A small wearable device which is equipped with sensors shows the data to the user on his mobile screen. Another use of the IoT can be found in e scooter app. Thanks to IoT, users have access to e scooters within the realms of their fingerprints. A user can get all data related to e scooters like the battery life, damage level, riding time, riding distance and its current location, on his mobile phone. User can even lock and unlock the e scooter by using his mobile phone. Coruscate Solutions has earned expertise to develop an accessibility-focused e scooter app for your startup.

Once deployed, the working of IoT seems very easy, but if we study the concepts applied for the functioning of the IoT, we come across lots of different terms and different protocols which establish the connection between two devices. In this blog, we will learn about a very popular protocol which is being used to integrate IoT technology in the e scooters.

We will chew over the MQTT protocol, its components, and properties. We will also explore how the MQTT protocol powers the e scooter app.

What is MQTT?

MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is the most commonly used protocol in every IoT project. It exchanges the data between the client and the server. Because of its small size, low power usage and ease of implementation, it is the most ideal protocol to enable the machine to machine communication. It works on a publish and subscribe model. By using the MQTT protocol, you can send data to multiple devices as well as receive the data from the multiple devices. MQTT protocol also supports constrained devices and low bandwidth which make it the perfect solution for the IoT applications.

The basic concepts of the MQTT that you should know, while developing e scooter app :

Before going further and understanding the working of the MQTT, it is very crucial to know a few concepts of MQTT.

Publish and Subscribe

As you can see from the image, Device 1 publishes a message to Device B, using a server. The reason why Device 1 is able to send a message to Device 2 is that Device 2 is subscribed to Device 1 to receive the messages. Messages are the nothing but the command and the data.

Publish and SubscribeTopic

Topic specifies where you want to publish a message. It is generally illustrated by string and separated by slashes. These slashes denote the topic level. For example, if you want to turn on the lamp of your home office, the topic would be home/office/lamp and the message would be “on.” Since MQTT client is subscribed to receive the message, it receives the message and turns on the lamp of the home office.

Publish and SubscribeIt is worth noting that topics are the case sensitive.

MQTT broker

MQTT broker plays a big role. It is the server which is responsible for handling data between two machines. In a broader sense, it receives the messages, filters the messages and publishes the messages to all subscribed clients.

MQTTThere are a variety of the MQTT brokers are available for use. These are Adafruit, Verne, Paho, CloudMQTT, and Mosquitto. Among all these, ‘Mosquitto’ is the most popular and commonly used MQTT broker. It is the open source, lightweight and cloud-based broker.

How does it work?

Like all other internet protocol, MQTT works on the client-server architecture. Clients make requests and the server handles those requests. To understand this in detail, let’s study an example.

Suppose, you want to turn on the light of the hallway of your home. To do so, you publish a message “on” to the topic “light/hallway”. This message will go to the MQTT broker and broker then forwards this message to the specific client. MQTT broker knows a lot about its clients. It remembers all clients with the client ID. MQTT broker also has the data of which clients are subscribed to which topics. Apart from this, MQTT broker gets ‘keep alive’ message from the clients after a certain time interval which lets MQTT broker know which clients are online and which are offline. The by default time interval to send ‘keep alive’ message in the Mosquitto MQTT broker is 60 seconds. If MQTT broker doesn’t get a message in 60 seconds, it checks the IP address of the client to see whether it is still connected or not.

Each MQTT message contains the three parts. These are the message, topic, and QoS (Quality of the service). We have already discussed the message and Topic.

If we talk about QoS, then it has three levels.

QoS 0 – Fire and Forget

In level 0, MQTT broker only sends the message to the client. It does not bother to verify whether the client has received a message or not.

QoS 1 – At least one

In level 1, the MQTT broker sends the message to the client over and over again until the client provides an acknowledgment. The problem associated with QoS level 1 is very unique and funny. If MQTT server doesn’t get the acknowledgment message from the client, it keeps sending the same message to the client. The client takes every single message as the different command and it repeats the same task.

QoS 2 – Exactly-once

In level 2, the MQTT broker sends the message to the client. The client receives the message and sends back the acknowledgment. But if MQTT broker doesn’t get the acknowledgment, the client sends the acknowledgment again, with the duplicate flag. This is how it makes sure that each message is received only once.

However, QoS holds a disadvantage too. QoS doesn’t save the message if a client is not online. That means, if a client is offline while the MQTT broker publishes a message, the client will never receive the message.

Teams of Coruscate Solutions have vanquished this problem by using the retain flag. It commands the MQTT broker to save the message for a new client which will subscribe to that specific topic in the future.

Properties of MQTT

According to data, the MQTT protocol is being used in 54.2% of the IoT projects. Properties of the MQTT which provide high scalability and high security are the reasons why most of the IoT engineers are opting for the MQTT. Let’s study all properties of MQTT in details.

One to Many and Many to One connection

As we have discussed earlier, there is no direct connection between clients. However, every client is interconnected via the broker. That means, if a client sends the message, it can reach all clients which are subscribed for that particular topic. With this unique ‘one to many’ property of the MQTT, you can get the data from multiple clients using a single message.

Similarly, MQTT supports the many to one connection too. In many to one connection model, many publishers can send the data to a receiver via the broker.

Bi-directional communication protocol

The two-way connection is another major property of the MQTT. With the two way ability to establish a connection, publishers and receivers can send the data and receive the data at the same time.

No more pinholes

In a typical system, data and the systems are coupled with each other that demand lots of connections and resources. With many open ports, every device has to look after each connection, and after making a change in one element, each device should be reprogrammed.

However, by building a system based on the MQTT, we can achieve a system which is more secure and needs less maintenance. In the MQTT architecture, MQTT broker becomes the central part and decouples the elements. By decoupling the elements, it reduces the number of open ports and assigns only one secure port. Moreover, every connected element of the system has its own firewalls which cater the ultimate security to the system.

ent, each device should be reprogrammed.
Reliability

As we have discussed earlier that MQTT broker is the central part of the system which establishes the connection between different clients. But what if MQTT broker encounters a problem to operating? In such a case, broker software performs the automatic handover of the system to the backup broker and keeps the system running.

Which features Coruscate Solutions can add in your e scooter app by utilizing the properties of MQTT protocol?

We always work with light-weighted sensors in order to increase the power efficiency in your e-scooters. But with the light-weighted sensors, we cannot generate a quick response to the user’s request as light-weighted sensors only publish the data after certain seconds. To overcome this problem, we use the concept of the retain flag. By using the retain flag, we make sure that users don’t have to wait until the light-weighted sensor publishes its next data. We always show users the latest data.

We use level 2 of the QoS. That means, we minimize the chances of the failed connection between the mobile app and the available e-scooters. With level 2 of the QoS, we build the whole online and offline infrastructure of your e-scooter business in such a way that while booking the e-scooter, the user won’t get annoyed. He always gets what he wants.

We always put more emphasis on the security and so, we craft the most secured online environment by utilizing MQTT’s property of constructing a system which only has one open port.

To increase your capability of managing the more e-scooter requests, we entrench bi-direction communication. Bi-direction communication allows mobile app and e-scooters to receive and publish data at the same time.

Apart from this, teams of Coruscate Solutions are smart enough to add more features like GPS tracking, Geo-fencing, remote lock unlock and fare calculation. So, if you are looking for the e-scooter app development, feel free to contact us for a free consultation.

The Santa Monica-based electric scooter startup which has raised $415 million in venture capital to date. It has taken another step to expand its scooter rental business by starting a monthly rental program that will complement its existing on-demand service.

They have charged a flat-rate fee of $24.99 to let the customers rent these e-scooters for a month. This rate amounts the charge to about one dollar a day. The customers get an unlimited ride on a personal scooter once they rent it for a month.

The scooter rental plan for Bird will first roll out in San Francisco and Barcelona. They are planning to take the plan to other cities this Spring. The company’s rental model already has a waitlist in which the interested people can enroll their names.

The e-scooter rental model works in the following manner:

  • The user enters the relevant information such as the location and the time when they want their e-scooter delivered.
  • Once they place the order, they get a follow up from a representative to confirm.
  • The representative arranges a scooter, charger and a lock to be delivered to the user.
  • Similarly, after the rental period is over, a representative will come and pick up the vehicle and the accessories.

Like Grover, Bird is now encouraging the bike rentals. Renting the e-scooters is much more equitable option than any other means of transportation.

Using the Bird e-scooter on daily basis used to cost $1 to unlock and 15 cents per minute. But the rental model will cost approximately $1 dollar per day for unlimited rides. This model of Bird will be much affordable for the commuters having average to low income and who spend a lot of amount on daily transportation.

E-scooter rental for monthly basis provides greater access to a sustainable form of transportation which is much more dependable than any other mode of transportation. At the same time, it is eco-friendly. So, it can be convenient, pocket-friendly for you and safe for the environment as well. However, according to Venture Beat, it is notable that Bird is attempting to avoid some restrictions on electric scooter usage.

The electric scooter rental company was founded in 2017 and has many competitors. But its chief rival is e-scooter startup Lime which has raised more than $765 million till now. There are many other rival e-scooter companies which have raised a huge funding amount like Spin, Jump bikes, Dott, Voi, etc.

There are no second thoughts about Bird being better-funded than many of its competitors. It is operating across dozens of markets in the US which includes Santa Monica, Austin, Baltimore, Dallas, Detroit, San Diego, Washington, D.C., and Paris. Bird has also custom-designed its e-scooters and use their own infrastructure to run the shared electric scooter rentals.

E-scooters from a security perspective

Just entering and earning through the electric scooter business is not important if you wish to stay in the e-scooter sharing industry for a longer time. There have been many cases where people are getting injured while riding electric scooters. People have even observed exploding dockless shareable two-wheelers in the past few years. However, the broken bones and head injuries are a great cause of concern for the government and also it is bad for the reputation of the electric scooter rental companies.

A study conducted by the Public Health and Transportation departments in Austin stated that a total of 271 people had experienced electric-scooter related injuries from September to November 2018.

According to an article on The Verge, there were a total 182,333 hours of e-scooter use during the study period. 891,121 miles rides were completed on e-scooters and there have been around 936,110 trips. The research team came out with the results that there were 20 individuals injured per 100000 e-scooter trips in the period of three-month. Out of the injured riders, half of the riders had head injuries. 15% of the people had traumatic brain injuries which could have been prevented if the people had worn helmets. Only 190 riders were wearing a helmet out of those who were riding the electric scooters.

The study concludes that the injuries could have been prevented. The use of a helmet can bring down the rate of head injuries in the event of a scooter crash.

Since the dockless electric scooters and bikes are becoming a common phenomenon in a lot of cities, many startups are investing money in the industry. The ride-hailing giants like Uber and Lyft are trying to bring down the traffic congestion by switching to e-scooters for shorter rides. Another study states that around 38.5 million trips were taken on electric scooters all around the US in the year 2018.

Not only the dockless scooters are posing safety problems but also there have been complaints about the ignorance of regulatory measures. Many of the scooter companies opt for asking for forgiveness rather than asking for permission from the city officials. This is leading to struggle for many of the electric scooter rental companies as they are being banned from the cities and are suffering huge losses in the business.

Strategy to avoid such bans and losses includes bringing awareness among your riders for their own safety while riding the electric scooters. Another thing that you can do is to work in collaboration with the city officials instead of working without their permission and facing the wrath.

To increase your profits, you can also launch an electric scooter rental or subscription model for your riders and offer some exciting prices and offers to keep them interested. Developing an e-scooter app to reach your audience can be helpful for your business.
